New Release

This week on New Release (episode #175!) … milk movers Derrick and Drew—with special guest Sweet Jenn!—take the wheel of a new post-apocalyptic Playstation throwback. Twisted Metal is a video game adaptation that stays faithful to the dark humor and over-the-top violence of its source material. Do you like sadistic characters committing heinous crimes and blowing each other’s balls off? Then TM might just be the show for you. Heart. Fart. We look back on our history with the game, choose our favorite playable characters, and debate how long this sick universe can sustain. Ride or die with us by searching New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe.

This week on New Release (episode #174) … big pinkers Ashley, Derrick, and Drew go back to the movies to see the brightest, most ballyhooed, box office event since—I don’t know when. Turns out Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is exactly what audiences were dying for to break up the monotony of superhero movies and old man sequels. Pair that with the simultaneous release of Nolan’s Oppenheimer and you get a theatrical weekend of atomic proportions. And it sure doesn’t hurt that the movie itself is entertaining AF. Let our conversation be the cherry on top of your cinematic sundaes after what’s been a delightful few weeks for film lovers of all fashions. Visit the podcast equivalent of Barbieland by searching New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe. Twisted Metal up next.

This week on New Release (episode #173) … snow bunnies Ashley, Derrick, and Drew drop in on the superpipe for one last shred. Shaun White: The Last Run is a 4-part docuseries that chronicles the snowboarding career of an absolute legend. Much like The Last Dance did for Jordan or Till the Wheels Fall Off for Hawk, The Last Run puts in perspective the singular impact one person can have on a sport. We discuss how White stacks up against other god-tier athletes and why extreme sports superstars are built different. Will we land the triple cork or go home with our microphones tucked between our legs? You never know when the next wave of podcast pros will step up, so search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and subscribe to show love for us old timers. Catch ya next week, Barbie.

This week on New Release (episode #172) … boring-sized Derrick and Drew discuss the wacky new Boots Riley show about a young black man in Oakland … who also happens to be 13 feet tall. I’m a Virgo is a mix of inventive visual storytelling with lots of opportunity for biting social commentary. And damn funny too. Can you even imagine going 19 years without experiencing a subwoofer or having Bing Bang Burger? Nah. We have plenty to dig into with the first episode of Virgo before we decide if seconds are in order. Also, speaking of seconds, Derrick finally started The Bear season 2! Follow along with all of our summer programming by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Till next week.

This week on New Release (episode #171) … magic mouths Derrick and Drew ingest a made for TV adaptation of a narrative podcast. That’s right, this podcast is about a show about a podcast. Sort of. The Horror of Dolores Roach picks up on the titular character’s first day on the outside after spending some 16 years inside—prison. We discuss Justina Machado’s performance as Dolores, the Sweeney Todd vibes, and its meta commentary on (fake) True Crime podcasting. Did we mention Derrick is back?! Tune in for all that in more by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Next week: Full Circle on Max.

This week on New Release (episode #170) … forkers Ashley and Drew savor every stressful moment of The Bear’s big return. Season 2 follows our favorite found family as they transform the building formerly known as the Beef into a Michelin-level fine dining experience. Oh, and they have like 8 weeks or whatever to do it. Yes, chef. We make it our challenge to talk about the new season without really spoiling anything, in case you, like Ashley, are taking your sweet time to finish. No shame in that. Shame on Hulu, though, for releasing all 10 episodes at once—expecting us to display will power when they knew damn well Will Poulter would break the internet. Join us at the table for so many fishes by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Next week: TBD.

This week on New Release (episode #169) … necro-gnomes Ashley and Drew check in on the TV scene—with Black Mirror, The Idol, and even a little Platonic action—before watching a new movie release. Isn’t Summer just like the perfect time to shack up with the latest and GORIEST installment of Evil Dead? Gone is the cabin, gone is Ash, but Evil Dead Rise does not hold back on the bloodshed. We discuss the new setting, the most insane kills, and, as always, whether or not we want MORE. If you sickos out there wanna join us in eternal oblivion, search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hit subscribe. Next week: The Bear Season 2. For real this time.

This week on New Release (episode #168) … deep fakes Ashley and Drew re-enter the Mirror-zone. Hey-yo Black Mirror returns to Netflix/Streamberry with more technophobic commentary and reflections on the modern human condition. The future is dark—it seems—and we’re already living it. What is it about true crime, wasting time, and focusing on our basest interests that we find so intoxicating? Today we talk about the first few episodes of Black Mirror season 6, as well as anthology storytelling in general. I can’t think of better way to unwind then looking deep into what makes us tick. Stay tuned by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Next week: The Bear is back! Yes, chef.

This week on New Release (episode #167) … bosom buddies Ashley and Drew take Rose Byne and Seth Rogan’s new TV show out on a bro date. Platonic asks the fairly tired question of whether boys and girls can be “just friends”—and if so, how that might affect other important people in their lives. Ultimately, it’s an excuse for us to spend lots more time with performers we know have great chemistry together. It’s not Neighbors 3, but not not Neighbors 3, either. Is that enough to make us want MORE? Will we last long enough to see all of Seth Rogan’s hipster fits? And finally, what’s next on our agenda for summer TV viewing? Stay tuned to find out by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe.

This week on New Release (episode #166) … podstars Ashley and Drew strut their stuff all over the hot new (HBO) Max summer release. Does The Idol live up to the hype you get with a “From the creator of Euphoria” tag … or burnout before it has any chance of achieving infamy? We dish on how relative newcomers like Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd fair in this stylized universe and speculate about what type of show this ultimately is. Campy thriller, please! And finally, we answer the question every listener is dying to know … do we want MORE? Tune in every week to find out by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Next up: Platonic on Apple TV+.
