New Release

Cyberpunks Ashley and Drew are finally free to discuss the end of A Murder at the End of the World. We put a bow on this half-baked whodunit and decide what—if anything—is satisfying about the show’s final 42 minutes. All I can say for now is we’ve been working really hard to develop our own ‘Alternative Intelligence’ and soon this podcast will be powered completely by ‘Drash’—a perfect synthesis of our soothing voices that will absolutely never encourage you to kill other podcasts on our behalf. That said, subscribe by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple. See you soon.

New Release presents Episode #3 in our second annual KILLER CHRISTMAS miniseries. The Sacrifice Game wastes no time giving us the gift of gore sorely lacking from our Killer Christmas season so far … and we welcome it with open arms. I don’t know about you, but I need satanic panic, demonic possession, and sweet 70’s stylings in all my Feliz Navidad fare going forward. Find out what else goes down in this boarding-school-with-a-secret movie by listening along. Then, spread holiday fear by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and summing the will to subscribe. Killer Christmas concludes next week.

New Release presents Episode #2 in our second annual KILLER CHRISTMAS miniseries. There’s Something in the Barn might be Gremlins-lite, according to Ashley, but that’s more than enough reason for us to give it a whirl. We examine the delicate balance between Man and Barn Elf and decide which rules are made to be broken. Who says Santa’s little helpers can’t rave like the rest of us? Furthermore, we uncover a crazy cosmic coincidence that has underpinned the last several New Release programs. What could it be?! Listen to find out. Then, let the bloody good times roll, by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and stabbing subscribe. Next week: The Sacrifice Game on Shudder (we mean it this time).

New Release presents Episode #1 in our second annual KILLER CHRISTMAS miniseries. It’s a Wonderful Knife is the slasher version of an all-time holiday classic—at least that’s the pitch. Lessons must be learned the hard way, angels fall, and Justin Long’s teeth shine bright. Regardless of whether this shameless mashup succeeds or fails, Ashley and I have one hell of a time kicking off KILLER CHRISTMAS 2. Let the paindeer games begin! Next week: The Sacrifice Game, also on Shudder.

This week on New Release (episode #191) … timelords Jamie, Jenn, and Meg are joined by their companion Drew for a TV event 60 years in the making. Dr. Who has featured so many wonderful D&C pairings over the decades—I gather—but the return of David Tennant’s Doctor (Who) and Catherine Tate’s Companion (Donna) is a BIG DEAL. That’s why we’ve tapped some of the biggest Who-heads in the game—along with Meg—to explain why the flurfy E.T. must be bagged and which buttons to press to save London. There’s A LOT on the line this week, not to mention a spiffy new TARDIS. If any of this makes sense to you, search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hit subscribe. Next week: It’s a Wonderful Knife on Shudder.

This week on New Release (episode #190) … stuffed turkeys Ashley and Drew solve a hot case in a cold place. A Murder at the End of the World drops eight strangers in Iceland for intellectual summit that quickly turns … you guessed it … deadly. Who killed FANGS and how many more secrets lie behind Clive Owen’s wood-paneled halls? We carefully dissect all the clues from the first episode and speculate about what will happen next. If you like podcasts about fictional true crime, you’ll absolutely want to search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hit subscribe. Next week: Dr. Who 60th Anniversary Special on Disney+.

This week on New Release (episode #189) … mother flippers Ashley (welcome back!) and Drew discuss a highly unusual new A24 TV series. The Curse is a dark satire exposing, potentially, what might be going down behind of the scenes of your favorite home renovation / HGTV-style reality show. If you’ve seen Nathan For You, you’ll recognize the absurd humor and uncomfortable tonal shifts BUT nothing can prepare you for certain *reveals* this show whips out. We break down the most surprising moments in microscopic detail for your listening pleasure. Fair warning, this one might make you blush. If you like living in the awkward zone, then search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hit subscribe. Next week: A Murder at the End of the World on FX on Hulu.

This week on New Release (episode #188) … straight up warriors Derrick and Drew slice into the latest of Netflix’s many forays into anime. Onimusha is an adaptation of a popular video game series—again—but this one (compared to Freddy’s) is a bit more accessible to us noobs. We discuss the beautiful visuals and brutal, bloody fights, as well as the plot (meh) and character development (neh). You’ll have to listen to find out if we were ultimately won over OR if we’re powering down and moving on to the next of so many wonderful anime series available to stream. The holidays are heating up, so search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hit subscribe. Next week: A24’s The Curse on Paramount+.

This week on New Release (episode #187) … audiotronics furballs Derrick and Drew spend upwards of 50 minutes at the scariest Chuck E. Cheese ever. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a movie adaptation of an apparently very popular experiential horror game where a security guard spends his nights fending off evil animatronic performers at an abandoned restaurant. We’ve all been there. Why does this job exist? What’s powering our murderous band of fuzzies? Will Josh Hutcherson’s character sleep through his shift and his sister’s demise? We peek behind the curtain at Freddy’s and answer all of your burning questions about the #1 movie in America. See what the rest of the year has in store by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe.

This week on New Release (episode #186) … alphas Ashley and Drew are faced with a horrible dilemma … could a movie called Slotherhouse not be, like, totally awesome? What happens when you mashup Chucky and Gizmo and have AI-generated humans? Things we can confirm … sorority house, cute sloth, light slaughtering. And maybe that’s all we could’ve expected from this campy Hulu feature. We celebrate the good, the bad, and plenty of ugly this week, as we begin our final countdown to Halloween. I promise, there are plenty of treats waiting for anyone who searches ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and presses subscribe.
