New Release

This week on episode #205 of New Release … earbenders Drew and special guest Jamie BINGE all of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender live action adaptation and … we have thoughts. James brings here OG fan perspective to the chat, while Drew keeps wanting to compare it to grownup fantasy, like Game of Thrones. What is this big-budget production trying to be—and for whom, we ask?! It’s been a wild ride, and we’re here to share all the ups and downs of what I’m sure Netflix hopes will be a long running adventure. Join the Aaang gang by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe. Free Sky Bisons for all! Shōgun coming next week.

This week on episode #204 of New Release … polar bears Ashley and Drew plunge into the dark crevices of Ennis in search of hard truths. Another case on True Detective: Night Country may be closed, but did we get the right answers to the wrong questions? Were the who-and-what-donnits of the season five four finale satisfying or half-baked? Listen closely to find out. Then search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe. Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix is up next.

This week on episode #203 of New Release … newlysaids Ashley and Drew sign up for a high-risk podcast assignment. Our mission, should you choose to listen, is to review the remake of the spy romance that spawned the sexiest, most scorching supercouple of the early aughts. In 2005, Brangelina was born. In present day, Donald Glover & Maya Erskine take over as the titular Mr. and Mrs. Smith. We discuss how this pairing compares and contrasts with the original and whether their chemistry even matters much to our enjoyment of the show. Sever all ties to other podcasts in your life and search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe to yours truly. Happy Valentine’s ❤️

This week on episode #202 of New Release … curmudgeons Ashley and Drew join Larry David as he screams his futile screams into the dying light of Hollywood. Farewell, fuckers. Curb Your Enthusiasm is back for one final round of your petty everyday frustrations taken to the extreme. And then some. We discuss whether we find Larry’s misanthropy cathartic, annoying, or a big fat dose of BOTH. Whether you like it or not, this dude’s acerbic world view has permeated pop culture for over 30 years and this is the end of … something. Pay your respects by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Next week we’ll circle back to Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Prime.

This week on episode #201 of New Release … thirst traps Ashley and Drew drink the Elordi milkshake—THEY DRINK IT UP! Saltburn isn’t exactly a new release, but it is by far the movie I’ve had the most conversations about since it arrived on Prime last Christmas. Like how could we let one more week go by without paying our respects to this groundbreaking piece of cinema. Let us bathe in the afterglow of a story about a family watching helplessly as everything they care about goes slowly down the drain. Then savor every last drop by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Curb’s up next.

OH MY GOD we made it to 200 episodes (!!) and what better way to celebrate than a convoluted metaphor involving pizza, TV, and death—the three things New Release is known for. Join chefs Ashley, Derrick, Drew, and James on a culinary odyssey that spans a lifetime of NR lore and concludes in our final destination—TV Tombstones. What is a TV Tombstone, you ask? Well it’s definitely not just a top 4 list with a cheesy twist—no, no, I promise you that. But really, thank you so much for listening all these years and please come along for another 200 episodes by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple or any other pizza provider. It’s party time!

This week on episode #199 of New Release … Ashley is back, baby, and we’re venturing deep into the darkness of the Alaskan winter landscape. The mystery of True Detective: Night Country appears vast and open-ended thus far, which makes it all the more fun to puzzle out what’s coming next. We have our theories, but mostly, we’re prepared to go down any icy road that Jodie Foster wants to take us on. Even if the three-light town of Ennis dead ends in a one-eyed polar bear. Howdy. Is that ominous or fortuitous? Searcg ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and I promise you’ll find out.

This week on episode #198 of New Release … portends Drew and James meander their way through the 2024 release schedule to the best of their abilities—with incomplete information. The format: We go head-to-head in a no-holds-barred fight to pick the things we’re most looking forward to before the other can steal them away. Fortunately (or unfortunately, if you like drama), we have completely different tastes and thus each pretty much get exactly what we want. Still, there’s only one way to find out which one of us picked the new A24 lesbian bodybuilder movie and which one selected a cartoon. Pick your side by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Next week: True Detective is back!

This week on episode #197 of New Release … moviemongers Drew and James say goodbye to 2023 in style. We each select 5—count ‘em—5—each—so 10—viewing experiences we can’t shake. Is that a good thing? Usually, but not always. Drew gets scared, Jamie moves to her own beat, and both of us are blown away by the movie event of the summer. Whatever could it be?! This is our last chance to look back before we barrel with reckless abandon into the 2024 release calendar. Flip it and reverse it by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and pressing subscribe. We’ll be right back with a 2024 preview episode before you know it.

Twas the day after Christmas and a podcast now must come out … so I gather with 6 to 7 friends for an unwitting recording sesh at my house. Now Jamie, now Megan, now Jenn … on Copus, on Lindsey, on Merrill … offer us your favorite holiday movie or at least describe your apparel. Down the chimney this episode will do its best to make sound … but if like Phoebe Cate’s dad in Gremlins it gets stuck and expires and scars you for life, we can’t be held responsible for the sick gifts you have found. Merry Killer Christmas to all, and to all, stay out of the light.
