New Release

This week on episode #225 of New Release … whine diners Derrick and Drew polish off the rest of The Bear season 3. We discuss whether the full course was Michelin Star worthy or half baked. In a season that includes rich backstory, new life, and a food funeral, why does it feel so stagnant at times? It’s not that we’re disappointed in you, Bear, we just expect absolute perfection! Why can’t you be as perfect as we remember you being before?! I kid, but the same pressure Carmy puts on himself, his kitchen, and every plate is the pressure we put on our favorite things. Is that fair, who knows, but we can’t help it. Support this vicious cycle of love and backlash by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Something new next week comes 🧑‍⚖️

This week on episode #224 of New Release … audio stars Ashley and Drew are in 1985 LA living the fuckin’ dream. Top down, radio up, denim head to toe. Just in time for the third installment of Mia Goth and Ti West’s throwback horror franchise. Of course, we compare MaXXXine to Pearl and X and decide if we’re satisfied with where our leading lady lands by the time all is dead and done. Then, we go kill by kill in painful detail to rank our favorite moments of bloodshed. It’s all fun and games until someone gets their balls squish-squashed. This ride has only just begun so search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe. More Bear next week? Perhaps.

This week on episode #223 of New Release … gastronaughts Ashley and Drew dine out on the beginning of The Bear season 3. We know everyone binges at their own pace, so we discuss the emotional toll this season has taken (thus far) without spoiling any big stuff. Also, has becoming the most anticipated show of the summer put undue pressure on our favorite fam of top chefs, yes? Can the post-pandemic restaurant scene really support Carmy and Syd’s traditional brand of haute cuisine? Is food even perfectable in the first place? Regardless, there’s more than enough to masticate over in our first course of Bear convo. Then come back for more by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and pressing ‘subscribe’. Corner!

This week on episode #222 of New Release … public transit defenders James and Drew look back at one of best, simplest action movies of all time. You know the drill. There’s a bomb. On the bus. If it drops. Below 50. Boom. We examine how Keanu’s stoic action hero energy pairs with Sandy’s effortless quirk and take charged-ness to max effect. Vroom vroom. Does the movie take some liberty with the laws of physics? Perhaps. Do we care? One of us does ;) Also, because this is a Movie Shots Club crossover episode, we have a healthy does of drinking rules mixed into the discussion. Cheers, everybody. Search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe. Next week, The Bear is back, baby!

This week on episode #221 of New Release … podcats Ashley and Drew revisit what some might say is the best worst decade in cinema history. That’s right, it’s 1985 and a select group of twenty-somethings are the hottest thing in Hollywood. Estevez, Ringwald, Nelson, Sheedy … am I forgetting anyone? Then, thanks to one well-titled magazine article, everything changed for these cats. Or did it? Andrew McCarthy’s new documentary Brats obsessively examines the real—or really perceived—fallout over David Blum’s infamous ‘Brat Pack’ moniker. We question whether his thesis holds any weight or if McCarthy just needed a way to justify his fade into obscurity. Not everyone survived the 80s, man. If this sounds like something you’d dig, search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe.

This week on episode #220 of New Release … partners in crime Jamie and Drew go undercover to suss out sus suspects attempting to have people contract killed. Cold. This is, until they discover each other’s true motives! Anyway, we debate whether Richard Linklater’s Hit Man works as a crime thriller or rom-com or both or not at all. Most importantly, does this movie raise our esteem of Glen Powell or throw cold water on his smoldering star? We got a live one here, so turn your police scanners to our wry frequency and come along for the ride. Then, in case you can’t get enough, search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe.

This week on episode #219 of New Release … RenMen Derrick and Drew chow down on a new show about succession on Max. No, not that Succession, not Game of Thrones, not HotD, not Righteous Gemstones—we’re talking about Ren Faire. This “documentary” series takes a novel approach to how it presents and stylizes the palace intrigue behind the world’s biggest Renaissance Faire. We discuss what’s real, what’s imagined, and of course, King George the creepshow who wants only for a companion to hop atop his lonely throne. Join our blossoming fiefdom by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe. Huzzah!

This week on episode #218 of New Release … PIs (Podcast Initiators) Ashley and Drew take a TV case that contains more that meets the eye. Go figure. Sugar, starring Colin Farrell, presents like a modern day noir detective story … but what else is going on? Say, why are you juxtaposing these classic movies tropes with modern storytelling? Are you trying to hint at something, show? This neat blend of old and new makes an otherwise all too familiar missing girl narrative feel fresh. Will we stick with this case to the end? Listen to find out. Then search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe.

This week on episode #217 of New Release … strive-hards Ashley and Drew break into the most exclusive club in town. Streaming now on Apple TV, Palm Royale is a light … thriller? Dark … comedy? Period … drama? We sort through this tangled web of madamening tonal shifts that could only take place in a late 60s Florida-set … satire? Seriously, what is this show going for? One thing is clear … Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, and the rest of the gang are having fun with the juicy plot and lavish production. But forget all that. What do we think?! Listen to find out, then search ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple to subscribe. Cheers 🍸

This week on episode #216 of New Release … pasta prima donnas Ashley and Drew gear up for summer school. Booooo. Lame. We did zero homework and decided to jump into season 2 of a spinoff of a show neither of us really watched in the first place. So smart. Is Pretty Little Liars: Summer School a fun mashup of horror tropes OR a cheap excuse to remix the same notes of nostalgia you get from Stranger Things and every other 80s-inspired piece of media? Or maybe we’re just too old for this shit? Stay out of principal’s office by searching ‘New Release’ on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Stay cool 😎
