As Jesus sends His disciples out, we’ll ask 3 big questions today: 1) what is Jesus calling His disciples to do? 2) How is He calling them to do it? 3) What promises does He give to them? We’ll see that life in the Spirit brings physical & spiritual healing constrained to God’s heart & upheld in Christ’s life.

Matthew 9:9-34 challenge us to recall how life in the Spirit changes hearts before it changes works because changing hearts through faith brings transformation.

Building off of what we've been seeing about Jesus in Matthew over the past few weeks, John teaches us why God desires us to be satisfied in Him and a few practical ways we can find satisfaction in God.

As Jesus starts to unlock for His audience what the life of the Spirit looks like in the Sermon on the Mount, we saw last week that it starts with mercy. Matthew 6:1-34 will build on this today to show us that Jesus’ life in the Spirit is a life of goodness; goodness trains us to be generous, forgiving, and peaceful.

Who is Jesus? Matthew seeks to answer this question for his audience of former Jews desperate for encouragement to cling to Christ. He begins his gospel with the genealogy and birth narrative of Jesus to show Jesus Christ has the right to redeem & reign over us because He pursues God’s covenant of reconciliation.

We saw last week that Jesus saves us to a life directed & transformed by the Holy Spirit to advocate reconciliation for others to God. But what does this look like? Matt.5:17-48 starts to answer this with mercy: that Jesus’ life in the Spirit is a life of mercy because practicing mercy changes us into God’s image.

As we celebrate the life given to us in Christ this Easter, what does this life look like? Matthew 1-4 has shown Jesus to be our Spirit-filled King & Redeemer; so, what does His life look like? Matthew 4:23-5:16 reveal that Jesus saves us to a life directed & transformed by the Spirit to advocate reconciliation for others to God.
