This piece is about the intersection between individuals with autism and performing. I explored how acting can be therapeutic for those with autism. I also followed an example, Samantha Elisofon, of a person living with autism who is talented in music and theater. Samantha was in a movie, Keep the Change, that has gotten a lot of recognition. In the film, non-neurotypical actors play the main roles—the characters they play are neuro-atypical as well. They screened some of the movie at the UN for Autism awareness month and invited Samantha to speak.

Guest host Maulik Pancholy presents a show about the past, the future, and how time flies. A young actor recalls critical moments in her childhood in Elizabeth Strout’s “Snow Blind,” read by Melora Hardin. Old schoolmates almost hook up in Joyce Carol Oates’ “August Evening,” read by Sonia Manzano. And a lifetime goes by in “Half a Day,” by Naguib Mahfooz, read by Bruce Altman.

The New School promotes progressive thinking and claims that the institution is open to all students regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, or gender. Lang alum Racquel Samuels, Lang students Shakura and Christian and Parsons student Tiffany Gilliam discuss their experiences of what being an African American student at the New School is actually like.

For one weekend each year, non profit cultural organization Open House New York unlocks the doors to over 140 spaces and buildings across the city, that are usually kept off-limits or restricted to visitors.

We visited three of these extraordinary locations to find out what significance their evolving natures carry as part of New York City’s vast history.

Hair is considered an expression of both culture, and identity. While there are black women who choose to wear their hair natural to embrace their blackness, there are also black women who choose to wear weaves or straighten their hair. New School students Mecca Withers Russell and Tatiana Glover discuss why wearing a weave or straightening one's hair does not limit one's black pride.

The New School undertook a university-wide exercise in Curriculum Disruption between October 12th through October 18th. WNSR spoke with two of the faculty organizers, Maya Wiley and Robert Sember, about the initiative, which looks towards the 400th anniversary, in 2019, of the first enslavement of African Americans in this country.

Zines may seem like a thing of the past, but there is a thriving community in NYC intent on keeping the community alive. We talked to students at the New School, zine-maker and illustrator and NYC-legend Fly and Marc Fisher, the mastermind behind Hardcore Architecture.

Students at WNSR dive in to the interaction between people and their smartphones. While these devices are fairly new to the market, it seems smartphones are becoming more and more a part of the way people interact with the world around them, and may even be considered a part of them.
