    Lee Min-jong

I Walk, Walk, Walk, Then… Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! What a Thrill

    Oil on canvas

    205x507cm

    1987

    [The script of this episode]

Take a look at Li Ming-jong’s work, I Walk, Walk, Walk, Then… Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! What a Thrill.

Just hearing the title makes you curious—what kind of “walk” could this be?

Now, start from the right side of the painting and move slowly to the left. As you walk, observe carefully—what creatures do you see?

At the center of the composition, a nude woman opens her mouth wide, sticking out a bright red tongue that acts like a dividing line, separating the scene into multiple intricate spaces. Look closely, and you will spot some of Li Ming-jong’s signature elements—“eyes”, distorted human faces, Cats, birds, fish, and many other bizarre beings weave through this vividly colored world. Using graffiti-like strokes, twisting lines, and rough, expressive brushwork, he blends influences from pop music, comics, and video games, creating an intense visual impact.

Now, turn your attention to the image beside the artwork label. This is the promotional cover for Lim Giong’s album Entertainment World. At the time, Lim Giong wanted to break away from conventional idol-style album covers and chose Li Ming-jong’s painting instead. The artist’s surreal, fantastical world establishes an intriguing dialogue with the experimental spirit of the album.

    Misafafahiyan (Metamorphosis)

    Single-channel video, color, sound

    16:27

    2022

    [The script of this episode]

Misafafahiyan, a newly coined word, combines misa, meaning "to become," and fafahiyan, meaning “woman", in the Amis language. This title reflects the journey of metamorphosis of Hao Hao, an Amis drag performer from the Fata’an community in Hualien, whose life story unfolds in this work.

The video adopts the style of a karaoke background video, featuring Hao Hao’s performances. As the footage progresses, he begins recounting his early years working in Taipei, interwoven with casual conversations between him, the artist Posak Jodian, and the production team. Hao Hao was once a certified professional singer, performing across venues such as cabarets, Western-style restaurants, burlesque parlors, and red envelope clubs. As these performance spaces gradually faded, he returned to his tribal community, where he continues to perform at weddings and housewarming celebrations. The entire piece is interwoven with three Amis songs, “Kinship," "A Friend from Elsewhere," and "Midnight Neon Lights, conveying Hao Hao’s life journey and transformation.

As an Amis artist based in Taipei, Posak Jodian’s works often explore the contrasts between urban and indigenous ways of life. Through this piece, she invites us to journey with a transgender performer through memories of both city and tribe, prompting reflections on identity, cultural experience, and the intersection between individual and collective belonging in contemporary society.

    Chen Shun-chu

    Image of Water

Photographs, wooden boxes, and glass boxes

    270x35x900cm

    1993

    [The script of this episode]

Before you stands a row of 25 wooden boxes, each containing a black-and-white headshot. These portraits feature the family members of the artist Chen Shun-chu—his father, mother, older brother, older sister, brother-in-law, and himself—at different stages of life. These portraits are arranged in a pyramid structure, with the father at the center as the core figure, the brother-in-law, the newest family member, at the front, and the mother at the farthest end, as if she is quietly observing the family from a distance.

Upon closer inspection, you will notice that the transparent glass boxes are filled with water, precisely submerging the faces of the family members up to their mouths and noses, creating a suffocating feeling. The “water” in the work symbolizes not only Chen Shun-chu’s hometown of Penghu but also the freezing of time. The still water seems to preserve the family’s images, suspended in an eternal moment.

Chen Shun-chu’s creations often focus on the memories of the self, family, and hometown. He began his journey into photography in high school when he acquired his first camera. “Image of Water” reflects his transition from pure photography to incorporating elements of space, sculpture, landscape, and installation art.

  • NTCAM Collection: Encounters in Reflection│308│Chang Chao-tang│Dim Light

    Chang Chao-tang

    Dim Light

    Gelatin silver print

    1977-1984

    [The script of this episode]

Dim Light consists of 26 black-and-white photographs taken by photographer Chang Chao-tang from 1977 to 1984, documenting his visits to the mining areas in northern Taiwan. The photographs were taken in locations such as Jiufen, Haishan in Sanxia, Houtong in Ruifang, and Yuandun Tabilas in Miaoli, capturing the daily lives of the miners.

In the images, miners can be seen riding mine carts in and out of the tunnels, resting by railway tracks and under pit props, and bathing together in bathhouses after work. In addition to labor scenes, Chang also records the everyday life of the miners, such as the propaganda slogans seen on the streets and the somber atmosphere after mining accidents.

One particularly notable photograph shows a man sitting on the ground, holding a charcoal pencil and focused on sketching on paper. This man is the Taiwanese artist Hung Jue-Lin, known for his depictions of miners, and Chang Chao-tang has recorded him sketching in the mines.

The mines, with their narrow, damp, and lightless tunnels, are captured in a unique way. Chang uses the focused beam of searchlights to sculpt striking close-ups of the figures’ faces, highlighting their labor-worn features while emphasizing the darkness and oppressive atmosphere of the tunnels. The entire series conveys an atmosphere of haze, solemnity, anguish, and detachment, demonstrating Chang’s signature photographic style.

    Everyday Maneuver

    Single-channel video, color, sound

    5:57

    2018

    [The script of this episode]

Can you imagine? The normally bustling city of Taipei suddenly transforming into a completely deserted "empty city" the moment the air raid sirens sound! This is the shocking scene that artist Yuan Goang-ming sought to present in Everyday Maneuver.

Filmed during a 2016 military drill, from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m., five drones flew along the central lines of five major roads in Taipei City, capturing footage from a slightly aerial perspective. This vantage point feels like invisible surveillance, allowing us to observe the city from a different height.

When the sirens go off, the vibrant and bustling city of Taipei turns into a ghost town, devoid of people. This surreal scene is part of Taiwan's routine military drills and reflects the country's heightened awareness of the looming threat of war. The nearly six-minute film, shot with steady and slow-moving drone footage, showcases the city’s vastness and prosperity. Yet, as time progresses, a growing sense of unease gradually emerges.

Yuan Goang-ming excels at blending symbolic metaphors with technological media to reflect deeply on existence.

Now, follow the images and experience the unsettling moment of this "Everyday Maneuver."

To Reconstruct 1cm³ of Land, It Requires a Centennial

    Soil and wooden board

    Dimensions variable

    2023

    [The script of this episode]

The installation before you consists of multiple deep brown containers, each filled with soil. At first glance, they may appear to be a massive abstract installation. However, if you move to the center of the work and observe more attentively, you will realize that they are arranged to form a sentence: "To reconstruct 1 cm³ of land, it requires 100 years."

This is not just the title of the work but also the crucial message the artist aims to convey. Soil is the foundation of life on Earth, yet it is bearing the consequences of human actions. Did you know that a piece of land contaminated by pollution takes an entire century to restore to a state where it can support life and be suitable for cultivation? This piece is not only a visual shock but also a reminder that if we continue to neglect our connection with the environment, we will eventually trigger an irreversible spiral of destruction.

Wu Mali often addresses ecological and environmental issues in her work. She collaborated with Bamboo Curtain Studio in a series of artistic actions concerning the Tamsui River’s tributary, the Plum Tree Creek, reexamining urban development issues and the question of the ecological city.
