Jon Renthrope is a New Orleans native, entrepreneur, and brewmaster who founded Cajun Fire Brewing Company® in 2011. The business is both family-owned and historically significant, recognized as the first Black/Native American-owned brewery in Louisiana and the U.S. South, the first Native American-owned beer brand in U.S. history, and the second longest continuously operating Black-owned beer brand in the world (13 years). Four pioneering researchers were just awarded the 2025 Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology for their role in developing CAR T-cell therapy to fight blood cancer. Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy works by reprogramming a patient’s own immune system to attack the cancer. This therapy is now helping patients fight blood cancers that were once considered incurable and is even being explored to treat other serious diseases.
