Since 2021, when Orleans Parish DA Jason Williams launched a civil rights division with the goal of addressing past infractions, judges have freed dozens of long-serving prisoners while citing lapses by the state. None has resulted in misconduct charges from the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, which polices the state’s 23,000 lawyers. The Louisiana Supreme Court last held a state prosecutor in check for misconduct in 2005. New Orleans criminal defense attorney Craig Murdock joins Newell to help explain why this is the case.
