Juvenile crime has dominated headlines across the country, but the conversation rarely evolves into any meaningful discussion because there is no accurate data available from juvenile courts. That is primarily because juvenile courts nationwide have been protected by a veil of secrecy that is virtually impenetrable. That secrecy has been touted as an effort to protect young offenders. In February of 2024, the Louisiana legislature held a special crime session during which the "Truth and Transparency Bill" was passed. This bill essentially made all crimes of violence, or any second and subsequent offenses committed by juveniles, public record. It went into effect July 1, 2024.
