  • Body Builder Care Workers Japan, AgeTech for Aging in Place, Bone Health and GLP1s 5-26-26

We admired a creative solution to Japan's nursing home crisis with the recruitment of bodybuilders, MMA fighters, and sumo wrestlers as caregivers. Ginger Griggs joined us from Japan with a New York Times article detailing how these athletes, despite being a small portion of the workforce, can positively impact care centers. We expressed hope that publicity of this idea might bring athletic men into caregiving, especially as AI impacts various job categories.

Elizabeth Magallon Fleury brought us an article on the benefits of AgeTech in enabling older adults to age in place, mentioning Laurie Orlov’s reports, the National Council on Aging and the benefits of Intuition Robotics’ ElliQ and Innovation Aging’s Joy For All robotic pet companions.

For our last News for the Ages show in May honoring Osteoporosis Awareness Month, Ellen Khalifa who is a peer educator for the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation as well as  a trained GLP-1 nutrition coach for Thrive Global reported on a study that looked at long term effects of GLP-1s on bone density, reminding us of the importance of maintaining muscle mass for GLP-1 users.

Linda Sherman and Ray Gordon provided commentary.

Note the word “facility” gets mentioned often in the article. While we try to avoid it on our show, please keep in mind that this sensitivity is quite uniquely American. We’ve found that in the UK and now in Japan, they are surprised that there is any negativity associated with it.

Visionary, one of several Japanese companies that targets athletes with the hope of channeling their strength and stamina into caregiving roles. Yusuke Niwa, 41, Visionary’s chief executive, now employs more than 30 bodybuilders who work shifts at 25 facilities.

  • AI Healthcare Training, Ending Well 4-21-26

In our News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club episode recorded on April 21, 2026, Benjamin Surmi highlighted focus in the UK on training caregivers in dementia care, emphasizing the need for effective training evaluation. Benjamin also covered AI's role in automating documentation, staffing analysis, and onboarding in senior living. Ellen Khalifa shared insights from her solution-focused coaching training using AI.

The conversation also covered the importance of end-of-life care, including recognizing signs of impending death and ensuring family members are informed and prepared. We mentioned that The Pitt had a very relevant episode on respecting the wishes of our loved ones avoiding over-intervention, particularly intubation when it would cause more distress than help. We recommended to follow Dr. Kaishauna Guidry for more resources on hospice care.

Finally Linda Sherman did one of her Film Corners, introducing her 2026 recommended streaming shows which includes “actors of a certain age and topics relevant to aging” called “Aging Gracefully” as a category.

  • Early Parkinson’s Predictor, Avoiding My Parents Mistakes, Regenerative Community Co-living 4-7-26

Our News for the Ages by Rethinking Aging Club April 7, 2026 episode falls in the week of World Parkinson’s Day on April 11 and a Rethinking Aging Club Podcast episode on April 9th focused on Parkinson’s solutions. We began with Ray Gordon's article and study about a potential blood test for early Parkinson's detection. Researchers at Chalmers University and Oslo University, identified biological markers in the blood that indicate early stages of the disease - 20 years before symptoms. Their findings may lead to easily applied tests within 5 years.

Elizabeth Magallon Fleury led a discussion of Steven Petrow’s list of aging mistakes to avoid that he made in his 50's and his realization that he needs to use that for himself as he turns 70. Our discussion touches on the importance of accountability, staying active, and maintaining a positive attitude as we age. Fun new phrase from Steven “organ recital”.

Ellen Khalifa shared insights on co-living communities inspired by Chip Conley’s Modern Elder Academy, emphasizing the benefits of shared living for older adults especially in "regenerative communities" rather than retirement communities.
