The Skagway Borough Assembly certified this year’s municipal election results on Oct. 8. After counting early and questioned ballots, two issues were decided: tax exemptions for seniors, and who will hold the second School Board seat. KHNS’ Melinda Munson has more.

Every fall, the Chilkoot River near Haines offers visitors free, close-up and near-guaranteed views of brown bears just 20 minutes from town. But those views can also bring large, unruly crowds who sometimes get too close.  As Avery Ellfeldt reports for the Alaska Desk, one local has been taking matters into her own hands.

The Upper Lynn Canal held its municipal elections on Oct. 6. With a total of 24 candidates and seven ballot measures between the communities of Haines and Skagway, there was a lot to keep track of. KHNS’ Melinda Munson has the preliminary results.

An investigation has commenced into a Haines group that advertised free gifts, like a cup of coffee, to anyone who votes in the Oct. 6 election. The idea was to increase voter turnout. But some are questioning if the gifts violate election law. KHNS’ Melinda Munson has more.
