  • Leading Up: Nine Strategies for Influencing and Building Rapport

Welcome to Season 3 of the Next Peak Podcast, where we help you redefine what success looks like for you and share strategies, tools, and stories to help you climb your next peak.

Most of us think about leadership, and we only think about the team that we lead, but that is a very short-sighted view of leadership. Most leaders are in middle management; they still have a boss and often lead a team. They have peers that are other managers and can influence them and their boss by learning how to lead up.

In today's episode, Dr. Parker Houston gives us nine tips to LEAD UP. These tips will help our team and us to expand our influence and lead up in our organization.

    1. The most difficult person you ever will lead is yourself. So lead yourself exceptionally.
    2. Learn your boss's likes and dislikes. Write them down.
    3. Manage your mood because your mood follows you into the workplace, and it affects your career.
    4. Be prepared every time you take your boss's time. Learn how to get to the point in the conversation by writing it down and being succinct and clear.
    5. Identify solutions, not problems. Bring three possible solutions to your boss or your leader.
    6. Never bash your boss. Refuse to gossip or receive gossip.
    7.  Lighten your leader's load. Taking things off their plate will gain influence and rapport.
    8. Become a go-to player; finding a way to deliver results consistently will ever get you noticed faster.
    9.  Never stop growing yourself. Having experience is not something that will automatically gain skill. You've got to keep stretching yourself.

Tips for getting along with a challenging boss:

    • Find ways to compensate for their weaknesses. Don't say anything about it, but if they're disorganized,  help them be organized.
    • Affirm them publicly for things you genuinely think they do well.
    • Commit to serving them, no matter what.
    • Identify their strengths and what they do well.
    • Learn their likes and dislikes.
    • Invest in your relationship, make reoccurring deposits
    • Refuse to gossip.

Welcome to Season 3 of the Next Peak Podcast, where we help you to redefine what success looks like for you, and share strategies, tools, and stories that will help you climb your next peak.

Today we are going to be talking about the wisdom of the trail; what mountain biking has taught us about life and work. Dr. Parker Houston and BCIP Mountain Bike Instructor Kelly Payne explore the metaphor of the trail as life. In Today’s episode, we're going to be applying a lot of principles from performance psychology that will help you with personal and family leadership, in addition to career and business pursuits.

The  fundamentals of mountain biking focus on 3 things:

    1. Stability
    2. Balance
    3. Control

Three principles for mountain biking and life:

    1. Focus on fundamentals in order to develop a strong foundation.
      • Mastering the fundamentals drastically increases your stability, balance, and control.
      • If you have a good foundation you can build on it, if you have a weak foundation you won’t progress.
    2. Keep your vision up, constantly scan and look out for what is coming up.
      • Don’t get distracted when you get exhausted.
      • If you know what is up ahead, you know how to prepare
    3. Be present, maintain connection with where you are.
      • Balance long term vision and investments in the present
      • Don’t lose connection with what is right in front of you

  • Grit: Why It's Important and How To Get More

Today Clint and Dr. Parker talk about grit, why it’s important, and how to get more of it.

The smartest people don’t always win. Instead, the persistent people who have guts, determination, and perseverance stick it out to the end. Grit will help in your marriage, parenting, finances, physical fitness, long-term goals, and just about any other area of life. If you’re looking for quick fixes, there’s a lot of other advice out there to tickle your ears, but if you want compounding change, you’ve got to get some grit.

    Without grit you:

    • Give up easily
    • Avoid things that are hard, meaningful, and rewarding
    • Stunt your growth
    • Never finish what you start
    • Take on too many things at once
    • Only invest in shallow relationships
    • Get easily offended
    • Make finding good friends more difficult
    • Devalue yourself
    • Limit your impact on the world

Dr. Angela Duckworth defines grit as passion and perseverance for long-term, meaningful goals

5 ways to get more grit:

    1. Pursuing goals with a higher purpose
    2. Change your internal story, make hard things good
    3. Stay growth-oriented and never stop growing
    4. Surround yourself with other gritty people
    5. Make it a priority to teach grit in your children
