- The Iron Laws | The Rules All Magic Obeys in Carthage | The Jackal of Carthage
Every fantasy reader has been burned by magic that does whatever the plot needs. Carthage doesn't work like that.
In this episode: the eight Iron Laws — the immutable rules every spell, rite, and miracle in The Carthage Cycle obeys. Why all power is a loan from the gods. Why every working has a price, and why the price is rarely coin. What blood actually buys, what it costs the soul, and why the sky over Carthage is not scenery — it's a scoreboard.
Seven minutes. Eight laws. Check the receipts.

Under a dark moon, on the shore below the richest city on earth, a rite buys three days of fire...and the price is counted in lives, exactly, a coin pressed into the earth over each one. The account is not closed. It is only kept.
This is the Prologue of THE JACKAL OF CARTHAGE, read in full...the fire in the dark that lights a six-book war. If it leaves a mark, the whole book is waiting...
From THE JACKAL OF CARTHAGE — Book One of The Carthage Cycle.
Written and narrated by S. A. Vale.

Carthage owed its army a year's wages. And then refused to pay.
THE JACKAL OF CARTHAGE is a serialized dark historical fantasy set in 240 BC — the year the richest city on earth lost a war and refused to pay the men who fought it.
Kadmar has no house, no name worth having, and no illusions. He is one of ten thousand mercenaries Carthage priced at nothing, and he is the only man in the garden sober enough to see what that decision will cost.
There are gods in this story. They are real. And they charge for everything.
Written and narrated by S. A. Vale - Book One of The Carthage Cycle.
