Movie maven and official NightSide Oscars Analyst Joyce Kulhawik checks in with Dan and the rest of NightSide Nation to talk about this weekend’s Academy Awards. The 90th Academy Awards ceremony features one of the most competitive, unpredictable Best Picture races we’ve ever seen, as well as a number of other interesting categories to watch.

Massachusetts voters legalized recreational marijuana in 2016, but there has been a lot of back and forth over who will be allowed to sell the drug, where they can sell it, and what other restrictions will be in place. Aaron Bluse is a founding partner of Altitude Organics, and originally started a cannabis retail and cultivation center in Colorado. Since then, he has grown his organization to include twelve licenses spread over eight buildings, and hopes to one day be the world’s largest product distributor of organic, sustainably based cannabis products. He sits down with Dan in the NightSide studio tonight to talk about his experience and what he hopes to do here in Massachusetts. He’ll be joined by Craig Sandler, managing partner of State House News Service, who has followed the marijuana rollout and the political battles it has sparked. Are you ready for recreational marijuana dispensaries here in Massachusetts? Do you have concerns about the industry?

A recent WBZ-TV I-Team investigation uncovered pretty rampant abuse of the handicap parking placards on city streets. But the problem is that there’s no real policy or program to enforce placard abuse. Boston City Councilor Michael Flaherty has proposed a solution that has generated mixed reactions. He has suggested that handicap placards be allowed to park in metered spaces for free for two hours per day, rather than all day. Councilor Flaherty is in studio to explain his proposal and why he thinks it’s the best solution to the problem. Do you agree?

High-profile Democrats often mock and belittle conservatives’ commitment to religion. Recently, The View co-host Joy Behar made headlines when she attacked Mike Pence for his religious beliefs. Behar essentially said that it’s fine to talk to Jesus, but once he starts talking back, that’s called “mental illness”. Behar may be regretting those words, however, after a new interview with Oprah was posted online. As the conversation turns to politics, Oprah says that she has prayed about whether to run in 2020, and will do so only if God tells her to in an obvious way. Do you think Behar will go after Oprah the same way she attacked the Vice President? Or do liberals only shame conservatives for their faith?

Scott Rasmussen, noted pollster and political analyst, checks in with Dan and the rest of NightSide Nation to talk about what the 2018 midterm elections could bring. Some have said that 2018 is going to deliver big wins for the Democratic Party, but is the President’s brand really as toxic as some experts think? Could President Trump’s support actually help Republican candidates win in November?

Bill Williams, owner of The Used Apple Store in Derry, New Hampshire, has taken a controversial stance on who he wants as customers. A post recently published on the store’s Facebook page has resulted in some serious scrutiny, after it declared that “if you affiliate with the Republican Party you are not welcome into our store”. Williams joins Dan in the NightSide studio (where all are welcome!) tonight to talk about this new policy and why he feels it is necessary. Should business owners be allowed to discriminate based on political affiliation?

Recently, the Boston Police Department found itself answering familiar questions about race relations in the community after tweeting a tribute to Red Auerbach in recognition of Black History Month. Those questions are being asked again after a video of an interaction between an officer and a young black man spread across social media over the weekend. The confrontation, though tense at times, did not result in an arrest or violence. However some are still saying the officer was out of line for even stopping the young man for questioning without enough probable cause. Do you think the officer was in the wrong? Should the young man have been more respectful and given the officer his name? Who is to blame for the sometimes adversarial relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve?
