About Nir Barkat - Biography Flash

Dive into the extraordinary life of Nir Barkat with Biography Flash, the podcast that explores one of Israel's most compelling and multifaceted public figures. Hosted by Marc Ellery, this show delivers a thoroughly researched, AI-driven biography of the man who has reinvented himself at every stage of life — and never stopped pushing forward.
Born in Jerusalem in 1959 and raised in the home of a Hebrew University physics professor, Barkat's story begins with intellectual rigor and the intensity of growing up in one of the world's most contested cities. From there, his path leads through elite military service in the IDF's 98th Paratroopers Division, including combat wounds sustained during operations in Lebanon, before pivoting sharply into the world of technology entrepreneurship. In 1988, Barkat founded BRM Technologies, one of the earliest antivirus software companies in the world, and went on to invest in and help build Check Point Technologies, now a global cybersecurity giant.
But the reinventions don't stop there. Barkat transitioned from tech mogul to municipal leader, serving a full decade as Mayor of Jerusalem from 2008 to 2018, winning two elections with 52 percent of the vote each time and earning cross-party endorsements for his business-minded approach to city governance. During his tenure, he worked to position Jerusalem as a tech hub, expanded opportunities for ultra-Orthodox and Arab communities, and — in a moment that made international headlines — personally subdued a knife-wielding attacker on the streets of the city he led. Since entering national politics and joining the Likud Party, he has served as a Knesset member and was appointed Minister of Economy and Industry in January 2023.
Whether you are interested in Israeli politics, tech entrepreneurship, urban leadership, or the psychology of resilience, this show offers a rare and detailed look at a life lived at full speed. Biography Flash also brings you regular updates on Barkat's latest news and activities, keeping you current as his story continues to unfold on the national and international stage.
