He most unlikely to have known any of that and such details of physics and human physiology. But he did feel strangulation increasing with ANY movement he tried to make.

Another point to consider is that the soft pillows under him are not the same as lying on the hard surface. More hard to roll off them, since they create an indent crevice, like a channel. Further restricting any sideways movements.
