Why he just could not roll off the bed? Because he did not have a LEVERAGE to swing his body and legs. In order for him to roll his feet off the bed, he would need to push his neck inside that noose against it. Since it was the only point of contact on which to push. But that would mean an even more tight strangulation, which would have resulted in closing neck arteries immediately and him passing out right away.

If the fan tilted down just a tiny bit more or the length of the belt or scarf was just a few inches longer, then after his head would have touched the floor, he could have used his forehead against the floor as the leverage point and could have tried to swing his body and legs sideways, from pillows to the floor. But those less than couple of inches short and his disregard for risks involved in doing solo strangulation, had led to his death.

Then he tied the other end of the scarf over the ceiling fan above and the leather belt on the other end was made into a noose. The noose was being kept open by taping it this way with a small size office scotch tape. Where after inserting the head in the noose and by pulling on it, the tape would unstick and the noose would drop and automatically close around the neck. Without his lover being around to strangle him, he had created a hanging noose instead, with the ability to insert his head through it after he would be all tied up.

Important thing to understand here, before some “experts” may say why he just could not roll off the bed or crawl back. He did not have a LEVERAGE to swing his body and legs. In order for him to roll his feet off the bed, he would need to push his neck inside that noose against it most hard. Using his point of contact of neck and the noose as a leverage. And then trying to swing his legs off the bed, on the floor. But that would mean an even more tight strangulation, which would have resulted in closing neck arteries immediately and him passing out right away. Before he could have a chance to swing his feet off the bed.

He most unlikely to have known any of that and such details of physics and human physiology. But he did feel strangulation increasing with ANY movement he tried to make.

Another point to consider is that the soft pillows under him are not the same as lying on the hard surface. More hard to roll off them, since they create an indent crevice, like a channel. Further restricting any sideways movements.
