This week I discuss the ability to gain freedom in our role as a Superintendent, things to look for and ways to achieve it, having freedom does not mean that you are free from responsibility or hard work.  I also spend some time on RFI's and how they play a role in the freedom we all desire so much. This week I discuss my perception and view point on what a Superintendent is. There are many types of people that can be a Superintendent, some have it easier than others because of their natural born traits and some have to work harder on things they are lacking. At the end of the day, it comes down to how bad do you want it and how hard are you willing to work to be the best at what you want to be.

This weeks episode is not for the snowflakes, from the bunker, I talk more about the big picture and strategy in making look ahead schedules and running the job site. We dabble in the dark art; such as the of use of spies and manipulations all, to do the right thing. We bounce around the book the Art of War and I share with you a sliver of the value I get from it. Amazing that book from over 3000 years ago, can be applied to todays day to day. The book version I discussed were from Anthony Cummins, which you can find on Amazon.

This week as we all are hiding out in our bunkers waiting for the world to end, with all the TP  that has ever been produced on the planet. I sit here hunkered down behind the vault door pondering life, work, schedules and where the hell is Tom Hanks at. Schedules as I am discovering come easier to me than other, only because I have been at this madness for 20 years. I discuss the logic in getting a schedule started, things I look for, timelines I have had historically on projects and some ideas on how to expand on my logic in making schedules.  I am not going to do it for you but I damn sure am pointing you in the right direction if you're paying attention.

Every Superintendent should be equipped with the basic set of protective gear as well as the miscellaneous tool to perform checks and reporting. Also every Superintendent should have a standard operating procedure on how to tackle the day in day out responsibilities of a project. We discuss, what should be in your pockets as well as why your routine should be like as you tackle the issues through out the day.

Good, Fast or Cheap, everyone one wants it but is it really possible? Some of my thoughts on who plays a role in that idea on a project and some ways to rope the unicorn.  We take an example from the start of a ground up project and the contractors involved at the beginning to explain out the good, fast, cheap logic. Also the discussion turns to how a Superintendent can affect this 3 point idea.

We all want to do good, but what does it take to do it?  Today I talk about the internal drive to accomplish what is needed on the job site durning the day time. As we progress, we will discuss each item from today in greater detail. 

Today we talk about the five basic things a Superintendent on a construction job site should be doing. Daily log, Schedule, Written and Verbal coordination, Verification of work and Knowing/reading the plans and specifications.
