Industrial synth-pop? Noise gaze? What exactly is electronic body music? All of these words have been used to describe the musical stylings of HEALTH, a band that refuses to stop screaming at you in every song title. Ambient drone metal, dream sludge, bliss metal: it goes by many names, but one has finally stuck. The term is "doomgaze", and it's exactly what it sounds like: the reverb-drenched guitars and soft dreamy vocals of shoegaze played at the heavy, sludge-like pace of doom metal. That sound goes back much further than you might think, but didn't catch on until the mid 2010s with a steady rise in popularity ever since. If you're a fan of shoegaze, you know that wall-of-sound when you hear it. Brooklyn-based Spotlights takes that wall-of-sound and cranks up the distortion, infusing the hazy, quiet vocals of dreampop with the heavy sludge of doom metal. Doomgaze is exactly what it sounds like: a blend of the slow and sludgy pace of doom metal with the wall-of-sound and ethereal vocals we've come to associate with shoegaze. Pencey Sloe is a French band that appear to have unintentionally stumbled into this label, or as lead singer Diane Pellotieri often puts it, their style is "completely uncontrolled, free, and blind." While the "doom" part of the label certainly applies during the heavier and sludgier moments of their music, what stands out most about Pencey Sloe is the melancholic, darkly luminous beauty of the vocals and lyrical themes. We chat about their debut LP Don't Believe, Watch Out and look ahead to the upcoming record Neglect that drops this fall.

That freedom from the judgements and structures of the global scene led them to create a whole new subgenre under the shoegaze umbrella called "thunder pop". Over the past decade, there's been a definitive shift happening in the indie-rock scene that leans very heavily toward that iconic 90s rock sound that we all know and love. Whether it be grunge, shoegaze, or any flavor on the wide spectrum of the alt-rock sound, modern bands are taking all of those waypoints in rock and breathing new life into them. Throughout the mid-nineties as proto-grunge, radio-friendly Nirvana knockoffs were signing record deals like they were going out of style, Sloan took the road less traveled after signing with Geffen Records, even in the face of mounting pressure from the label to stay on that grungy, noise rock course. A second full-length album found the group heading in a more refined pop sound, a world away from the washed-out fuzz of their previous releases. Despite having been swept under the rug by Geffen, Sloan refused to bow down to the major label's demands, and have continued to remain steadfast and true to their unique brand of indie pop even after all these years.
