In part 3 of our Sex and Intimacy Series, host, Alicia Stickles, and licensed marriage and family therapist, Ashley Mossy, have a hard and needed conversation about how past sexual trauma can show up in marriage. They discuss misconceptions concerning the subject of sexual trauma by defining what sexual trauma is and isn't. They also talk about the ways past sexual trauma affects intimacy between a husband and a wife, and what to do about it. This life-giving conversation offers encouragement and direction for couples who have sexual trauma as a part of their story. Christians are taught that sex is a good and holy act created by God to be shared within the confines of marriage. Sex is meant to celebrate the intimacy and connection between a husband and a wife. However, what is often not discussed are the disconnects, challenges, and other nuances that can leave couples feeling like the issue of sex is anything but good. In part 1 of this three-part series on sex and intimacy in marriage, Alicia and Abby begin this much-needed discussion by taking the biblical principles concerning sex and intimacy and helping understand the various aspects contributing to good sex and intimate connection. They talk about what it looks like to shepherd your spouse's heart, the 3 parts to a relationship, and types of intimacy, and candidly address dynamics that could contribute to disconnects in the marriage relationship. After the fall of man in Genesis 3, initmacy was replaced with incompatibility and trust was replaced with distrust within the relationship of marriage. Over the next two episodes, Alicia sits down with Dr. Lance Bourgeois, head pastor of Grace Church in Wichita Falls, TX, to discuss the hope of having a Genesis 2 marriage in a Genesis 3 world. In this episode, Alicia and Lance begin the process of diving into common "trigger" words when it comes to marriage, and how the original context of words like, "helper" and "head of household" are actually life giving terms as opposed to terms that constrict or devalue the roles of husband and wife.
