What does it cost to follow Jesus when your father leads the mosque? For Brother Rachid, the answer was everything — at least for a season. Growing up in Morocco, he first encountered the gospel as a teenager while tuning his radio during Ramadan, stumbling across an Arabic-language Christian broadcast. He wasn't looking to convert; he was looking to argue. He wrote letters packed with Quranic verses and Hadith, trying to refute what he'd heard. But the search for ammunition became a search for truth.
At 16 or 17, he accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. When his family found out — his father was the imam of a local mosque — the consequences were swift and total. His mother gathered the family, asked him to recite the Islamic creed, and when he refused, he was cast out. No shelter. No food. No contact. He spent two years sleeping on the streets of Casablanca, kept alive, he says, not by his own courage but by the grace of God.
In this conversation with No Longer Nomads, Brother Rachid walks through the full arc: the smuggled Bible (the Gospel of Luke, thin enough to slip past Moroccan censors), the underground Moroccan church he didn't know existed, the years of interrogation and arrests that eventually forced him to leave the country, and the ministry he has built since 2006 reaching Arabic-speaking audiences across satellite TV, YouTube, and social media. He also shares one of the most striking stories from that ministry — a phone call from a man who had belonged to a violent extremist group, who told Brother Rachid that his programs had helped him escape before he killed anyone, or was killed himself. 'I used to want to kill you,' the man said. 'Now you are my brother in Christ.'
Brother Rachid reflects on what it means to speak the truth about Jesus into a world shaped by fear and shame — and why he believes the only lasting hope for the Middle East runs through the same door it ran through for him.
