Why feedback is important for women's confidence

We wanted to raise this important topic again and what better way than to do it with this great episode with amazing guest Michelle Jackson who is now Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Shaw Trust.

    Takeaways!

    • Barriers facing women at work
    • Why feedback is important
    • Celebrate the achievements
    • The importance of peer recognition
    • Internal Women's Networks (ERGs)

Today we are talking about the barriers that women often face when it comes to their career progression and what simple steps can be taken to to support them especially associated with remote working and the impact that this can have on women's visibility and career progression.

  • 129. How do you know when it is the right time to lean in? Re-release with Kat Wellum-Kent

How do you know when it is the right time to lean in?

This is such a great episode that we wanted to share it again! Since recording this Kat has progressed her career in so many incredible ways! Go check her out over on LinkedIn and connect with her right here >> https://www.linkedin.com/in/katwellum-kent/

    #Takeaways

    • Finding your own way of leadership really works
    • How to start making those steps and the importance of building habits with self promotion
    • How to notice if you are playing small through use of your own language
    • The benefits of having an external coach
    • How to showcase yourself rather than sell yourself

On today's show we are thinking about how you know when it is the right time to lean in? And what I mean by that is starting to think differently about your career progression, how you stand apart and building a self promotion strategy that gets you the results you REALLY want.

As a previous client of mine Kat and I were recently reviewing how far she has come by getting clear on what she wants and the impact that being more visible can have for her own ambitions and those around her. Kathryn is a shining example of a woman who has definitely leaned in to owning who she is and the results speak for themselves.

    Guest:

Kathryn Wellum-Kent is an accountant and business advisor working for MHA Monahans, one of the leading professional services firms in the South West, after spending the first 16 years of her career working at Deloitte.

She is passionate about working with start-up and scale-up companies that have big ambitions, and need support to achieve these, with particular focus on capturing & interpreting financial information needed for their business planning & decision making.

Beyond that though, Kathryn has a strong vision of how the industry needs to change to better support its clients, its staff and the wider community and is using her current role and her network to drive change and challenge traditional thinking. This work was recognised through being named one of the top 50 women in accounting in 2021.

She has also recently taken on the role of finance trustee at a charity based in Swindon called Inner Flame, which is working to support 16-25s not currently in education, employment or training who are experiencing barriers to independence or contributing to their community.

"An important part of leadership is finding your way of doing things rather than trying to be something else" Kathryn

"We have habits that don't often serve us and can be connected to staying small" Gemma

"You've got habits and you don't even realise you are doing them" - Kathryn

"I stopped cutting my legs off before I had even started" - Kathryn

"I really wanted to work with someone who could work with me to help me understand some of the things that were holding me back and achieve what I wanted to in my career" - Kathryn

"All the things that we have worked on together have helped me talk about myself in a very authentic and open way" - Kathryn

"I'm not the kind of person who can sell; I don't want to feel like i'm selling myself, selling my company - I just want to show people about me and what I am doing and I feel like that should speak for itself" - Kathryn

"You don't have to throw yourself in the deep end it's about building up these things gradually" - Gemma

  • 128. How opening the door helps ALL women be seen and heard with Lucy Ndlovu - Re release

How opening the door helps ALL women be seen and heard

    • The importance of gatekeepers to open doors
    • Why mentoring matters and how reverse mentoring is powerful
    • Black women and visibility in the workplace
    • Systemic inequalities and bias
    • Allies and the skills that are really needed

Today on the podcast we have an inspiring woman who is passionate about breaking down those inequalities that women of colour, black women and those from ethnic minorities face. Lucy Ndlovu is also an advocate for mentoring and believes that it is a game changer.

We talk about the impact of role models and how often as a black woman comes a huge responsibility and the power of reverse mentoring - yes that means a CEO or director being mentored by someone possibly less senior so they can understand their lived experiences which would only serve to benefit them as individuals and allies but also the company as a whole.

Lucy and I also share the impact of gatekeepers and how one man in New York changed Lucy's life forever when he literally opened the door for her. The story gave me goosebumps. Keep listening, you don't want to miss this one.

"Open the door and then leave it open for others to follow" - Lucy Ndlovu

  • 127. How companies can encourage their women more effectively with Jess Taha - re-release

How companies can encourage their women more effectively with special guest Jess Taha.

Re-sharing this amazing interview. Jess has moved on since the first release of this episode and is now the Board HR Director for Mr Fothergill's Seeds Ltd.

    #Takeaways

    • The important part that companies can play when it comes to women being more visible.
    • The company culture is vital to identify and empower the top and emerging talent.
    • Being able to be themselves allows women to step up and find their own ways to be more visible.
    • Companies need to give women the platform to shine.
    • Organisations need to start by talking to their people.
    • The drive starts at the top and isn't all down to HR to solve the gender gap.

Today on the No More Hiding podcast I am talking to an amazing and super inspiring woman all about how companies have a responsibility in providing their female top talent a platform to help them be more visible and own their ideas and opinions.

Working Mum. Essex girl. Committed feminist. Jess Taha has spent her career working across multiple industries for a number of household names and most recently with Swan in social housing. Her extensive experience as an HR professional has seen her deal with people, talent and policy and the challenges those bring for women progressing their careers. Promoting, pioneering and advocating for fairer working environments for all, Jess is unapologetically a woman on a mission.

So listen in to this incredible conversation that will give you insights into how companies can support women's career progression and self promotion and how women themselves can start owning their expertise. Love love love this conversation and could have chatted all day to Jess!

"I got massive imposter syndrome and didn't feel like I fitted in where I was working...I felt like I had to fit in with that 'boy's club" - Jess

"I got into HR because I wanted to fight injustice and I am a huge feminist and I believe in equal pay" - Jess

"As we get older we tend to stop giving a shit about what people think" - Jess

"Part of my role is un-training women everything they have learned as a child about being a good girl, about being accepting about having to fit in and having to please people and wanting to be liked" - Jess

"I am a senior manager in my organisation and I still make sure I have those conversations with people on the ground regardless of their level to really get to know them and that's when you start to realise oh my goodness we have got a good girl on our hands we need to make them more of a rebel" - Jess

"People can look at me and think god she's so confident and actually I am not - underneath it all I am actually just a girl from Essex … and people don't always know the fight or the struggle I have been through to get to be this confident woman" - Jess

"I am working with companies and these group coaching programmes and what comes up time and time again are all these amazing ideas and opinions and that they haven't shared any of them outside the group" - Gemma

"It's all about unleashing her capabilities and getting her confidence up. For me it's all about giving that individual the platform. I don't do anything she shines on her own. She is amazing" - Jess

    #Takeaways

    • When women think they have done all they can to be seen and heard there's always more to do
    • Finding and trying different strategies and techniques really can make a difference to being comfortable with self promotion
    • Self Advocacy is a crucial part of Self Promotion
    • Getting clear on what women really want from their career is key for knowing the purpose of visibility and raising profiles
    • The internal work and personal development plays a significant part in talent development
    • Try the checklist to see what else can be done in raising visibility and owning expertise

Today we are talking about what happens when women think they have done all they can when it comes to securing future promotions and opportunities.

It can really disheartening if women feel they have done ALL the things in terms of raising their profile and being more visible only to find that they still miss out on opportunities. In this episode, I share a quick checklist to make sure that women have a platform to access opportunities and that they are really doing all they can and stacking the odds in their favour when it comes to their career progression.

"Self advocacy. It plays such an important piece for self promotion. Without having the confidence to be able to talk about yourself and ask for what you want then all the other strategies may not come to anything." - Gemma

"Have they been identified as emerging or top talent for succession planning in the future talent pipeline? And more importantly have they been told about this and what they need to focus on to secure future opportunities or promotions" - Gemma

What is your company doing to celebrate International Women's day in March 2021?

Get in touch as I have an excellent lunch and learn session that is being booked by companies right now that focuses on self advocacy and how this builds self promotion for women's career progression so that they can start owning their expertise, and speaking up and asking for what they really want which fit is really well with the theme #ChooseTo Challenge.

Email me for more info [email protected] or book in a call as I have a great deal happening for any company that books it in before the end of the year and I cannot wait to facilitate these sessions.

How to Break Your Fear of Success

    Quick Win Episode!

    • How to recognise you have a real fear of success and what you can start to do about it!

Diving straight into this quick win episode where I want to follow on from last week where we talked about the impact that women can have when they speak up and how that impact can actually be causing a fear of success for you that's stopping you from moving forward.

The best way to break the fear is to break the habits that keep it strong. We all have habits or little rituals that we do in order to protect ourselves from things that we don't want or that scare us and fill us with fear. This fear can feel very real and although some people laugh it off it can actually be something that is holding you back from putting yourself forward for opportunities where you can really excel, shine and show everyone who you really are and what you are truly capable of.

Listen in and try the steps I share to get those quick wins.

What happens when women ask for what they want and they get it

In today's episode we are focusing more on what can actually happen when women start speaking up and promoting themselves.

I also want to chat about one of the biggest fears that women can have and that they don't often realise they have which is the fear of success. Sounds counterintuitive right? But it is a very real fear for some and can get in the way of actually getting the success and opportunities you deserve.

"Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women." (Maya Angelou)

"When we can recognise things stopping us from speaking up there can be no stopping us" (Gemma Stow)

I also share some of the things that can come about when you stars to promote yourself and what you stand for in different ways - here's a few I have seen happen first hand - listen in to hear more.

    • Project opportunities at work
    • Speaking gigs inside and outside of work
    • Invitations to conferences and events

How to stop standing on the sidelines and get networking on LinkedIn

    Quick win episode:

    • 3 quick things you can do to up your LinkedIn game.
    • Take the test - figure out where you are doing well or where you have gaps in terms of raising your profile

I have been talking to a lot of people recently about LinkedIn the thing I have noticed is that they have dipped their big toe into LinkedIn - they have set up their profile and possibly added a photo of themselves.

But what I am hearing is that they say they are on LinkedIn and using it to raise their profile but in all honesty what they really mean is that they are on the platform but they aren't really ON it. Maybe this is sounding familiar?

"LinkedIn is like one big networking event" - Gemma

"You can't be a secret and a success - you can't raise your visibility game without being visible and you cant see what all those amazing opportunities are if you are not out there and putting yourself forward for them" - Gemma
