No Nonsense Nana

If you are not ready to retire, you are not alone!  Cis Ahearn started her YouTube channel, "Let's Talk About It" at age 70 creating over 200 videos.  Before that she was a traveling nurse going around the country. She wrote a blog which turned into a book about her companion cat in the "Adventures of Sweet Pea!" A feisty feline who had developed her own narrative travelled in the van, litter box and all. 

Cis was one of the 37 co-authors, along with myself in the book, Ageless Voices. She talks about her 2 personal stories.  One was about a 25 year old friendship that had ended and I think many of us can relate to that. The second story centered around a plane crash she was in at age 13.  I can only imagine the horror of that.  Cis, however had no recollection of it until she wrote about it for a writing assignment at age 40.  The more she wrote, the more she remembered.  If you have suffered a traumatic experience, it is amazing how the brain can protect us from it until we are ready to face it.  I can attest to that.

Cis was active in her nursing career during Covid and she touches on her experiences during that time, especially with those who fought against the protocols.  She is still a part time nurse advocating for women.

Currently Cis has several publications in her platform the Stan Store, many of which came from her YouTube videos.  She has free downloads, videos, nursing and patient resources, practical tools and opportunities to work with her.  These are all designed to help us make informed choices, navigate change and create an individualized life that works.  Cis says that we are still the women we were before life got in the way.  You are just wondering how to bring her out.

As a licensed clinical social worker and holistic cancer thriver, my guest Tiffany Fieken shares with us some of her journey and what she has learned. Tiffany believes that her social worker background greatly helped her to move forward, in being able to be of an even greater advocate, for those looking for a holistic approach on their personal cancer journey. We discuss our experiences of what changes in our health have occurred by using the phototherapy patches from Lifewave. Some of the benefits are detox, gut issues, better mood, calmness, decreased brain fog, sleep and skin appearance just to name a few.  Tiffany's heart is to help people and she is well on her way.  Her goal is to create a Wellness Retreat for those going through cancer treatments. This episode is a tough one.  My guest Patty Corrigan Myers is a woman who will not give up! Her journey started with her son being diagnosed with autism.  From that, she became the founder of Building Pathways Foundation which provides support programs for people with autism including independence skills training, housing and social classes. She wrote a book, Autism is a Blessing.  Patty strongly believes that her work, was only the beginning of the training she would need to face, with her family years later. As Patty tells her heart wrenching story of her beloved husband, Tony going to the hospital, what happened there and up to his untimely passing, she is stoic and determined.  Patty also shares her inside joke about elephants that she and her husband shared throughout the years that brought strength, some humor and the creation of the elephant coin.  The hospital protocols this family and thousands of others endured during that time is finally being brought to light.  Patty and hundreds of others will be in Washington, DC on September 28, 2026 as part of Senator Ron Johnson's Round Table. At this hearing focused on hospital protocols, families, nurses and doctors will share their experiences.  Patty is a voice and a power to be reckoned with as she focuses on, not only her husband's story but the countless other voices who cannot speak for themselves. 

Patty created a 3 part documentary series with the funeral assisted money she received for covid deaths. I had no idea that this money existed.  That tells us all something right there. The documentary not only tells about her experience but also the loss of life in other families.

It is the time of year when school begins, and some start a new journey going off to college. My conversation is with my 18 year old grandson Jack discussing his mindset and preparation for college.  I approached Jack with the idea of coming on the podcast and he was eager to do this me. Over the years, Jack was been very agreeable to most of his Nana's ideas but he could have said no.  I believe that a Baby Boomer and a Gen Z can have thoughtful and meaningful conversations.

Excitement mixed in with some thoughts of uncertainty also includes Jack's parents and brother.  Jack is the oldest having one younger brother so it is a new experience for the whole family. The first one leaves the nest.  I feel that Jack is better prepared than some others might be because he has spent the last 4 years on his high school debate team. He learned his craft, gained experience and maturity, built friendships and increased his knowledge while being away from home several times for debate tournaments and summer camps. Jack played baseball for several years and he was ready for a change.  When his mother suggested trying debate, he was not crazy about the idea  but it turned out to be a great decision.  Jack was the first one from his high school to be selected to represent his school in the Nationals, which I learned was a very big deal but Jack has always been very modest.  This is where I can brag on him!  Over the years he brought home lots of trophies and medals but he was most proud of receiving 1st Place in the UIL State Championship and being a National Finalist.

As Jack prepared for his out of state journey with his parents, I wanted to spend a little extra time with him.  We both enjoyed doing this podcast.  I think my listeners will agree that Jack is an exceptional young man, well spoken and can answer questions off the top of his head with no prior preparation. Jack wanted those going off to college to know the importance of maintaining a positive mindset when facing challenges. To view future opportunities with excitement rather than fear, can create an overall good first college experience.  This Nana is proud of Jack's wisdom and his heart for others.  Perhaps this conversation can move on to future discussions.  Who knows, maybe the Nana and Jack Show?

The continuation of my thoughts and experiences during the Covid lockdowns when we were in the thick of it. While listening to me, can you take yourself back there?  What did you think in the beginning of 2020?  What were your experiences throughout that year and perhaps even into 2021.  Many people suffered for all sorts of reasons and my heart was very concerned about the children.  Not only was their education disrupted but domestic violence was on the rise.  My blood boiled on many occasions on how people were treated. I believe that criminal charges should be applied to not only Fauci but the media, the pharmaceutical companies and anyone else who brought harm to someone.  My question is "what thoughts do you have now that you may not have had then?"  Would you do something different?

 I feel that children's books can teach adults too.  By looking at something from a different perspective creates deeper understanding and conversations, especially in today's cultural climate. Way too often, especially with children, they are being encouraged to act, behave, dress, think a certain way and even that they should change their gender.  Maybe it has been years since you heard these words. Did you hear them differently as I read them today? Children should be protected and not coerced or bullied into confusion.

There is no doubt that the hottest cultural topic raging through the United States and around the world right now is the Congressional Hearing with Dr. Fauci. For those who watched it, I am sure that some old feelings were stirred up.  Mine sure were.  For the next 3 episodes I am going to share some of my diary from January 2020 through March 2021.  With that will be included dates along with personal perspectives. What did I do during lockdowns? Why did I feel so compelled to follow the stories? Why was I recording interviews of experts who questioned the Covid response? Why did my feelings change from at first being OK with Fauci, to when I was not?  What the hearings proved to me.  Do you have a story to tell about how Covid affected your life?  I would love to hear it.
