This episode is in English.
In this episode, we continue to talk to Mr.Ben Young about the music of Cecil Taylor during the Wisconsin times, 1973-1974.
Ben Young made the Albert Ayler’s box set “Holy Ghost” realised for our ears and minds. He is the writer of the book “Dixonia”, a bio-discography of Bill Dixon and he is now in the process of writing a biography for Cecil Taylor. These are a few points yet there are many others when we talk about Ben.
Ben describes his personal history of how he started to listen to the music of and started to think about Cecil Taylor’s music. He also mentions the times Cecil visited WKCR FM and the recordings they did both music and poetry.
Meanwhile Karen Barca was mentioned. She was asked to lead the band while Cecil went for a tour with the Unit to Japan ending up at then Yugoslavia, Ljubljana at the Spring of 1973. Ben asks whether anybody is familiar with this Ljubljana concert, where and when and for sure any recordings.
One piece that we are going to listen is the Unit with the participation of Mr Arthur Williams the trumpet player whom was asked to join the group but he extracted himself from the group just before they were about to leave for Japan. This is a unique recording Ben brought for our ears from the radio show of Mr.John Sinclair who produces shows at radiofreeamsterdam.org. It is a piece of the Unit at the 1974 Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival in Exile in Windsor, Ontario.
Arthur Williams is slightly touched, his music, his collaborations his latest release and Peter Kuhn’s and Jemeel Moondoc from a very significant research label, “NoBusiness Records”.
As a closer, Cecil Taylor Unit’s concert with Jimmy Lyons, Sirone Norris Jones and Andrew Cyrille from Cafe Musart, 20th of December 1973 was sampled.
We are very much honoured to have Ben Young with us.
