Zuzu is an incredible artist from Liverpool, creating noisy, infectious tunes which show her passion and love for guitar riffs.  Writing music from the age of 7, she has had a love and drive to become a musician for years, signing her first publishing deal by the age of 18.  Zuzu has had an incredible career so far, touring with artists such as The Courteneers, Yonaka and Ten Tonnes.

I’ve known of Zuzu for years, she is good friends with my lovely pal Lauran Hibberd so I reached out via Instagram to see if she’d be keen to have a natter.  I was thrilled when she agreed as I think her strong opinions and thoughts about the music industry would make a wonderful addition to the series.  In this episode we talk about her time touring with The Courteeners and how it shaped her world as a female musician within the industry, we also discussed how important her fans are to her and how she communicates with them via Facebook.

Melody J Myers is a music writer based in California, USA, who writes for some brilliant indie mags such as Underground Zine, Buzz Kill Mag and UK Safe and Sound.  Pre-Covid, Melody was working within bookings, helping to find venues and unknown artists, researching new music and finding more about her local music scene.  She is also pretty nifty with a camera, shooting gigs and diversifying her skillset.  

I have never met Melody in person, we've known each other for two years or so after she wrote an article of me in Buzz Kill Mag, when they released their first print edition.  She is such a full of life individual, with a strong passion for the visual arts and journalism.  It was SO lovely to catch up via zoom and hear her story into the music industry.

Grace Goslin is a freelance journalist and DJ based in London.  We met nearly two years ago at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, I was shooting images for the collective she part owns, Femme Collective.  Grace is an absolute ball of fun and laughter, she is such a character and a delight to chat with throughout this podcast episode.

Grace has worked incredibly hard over the last few years to grow her shared platform, Femme Collective, bringing out physical print publications and running events.  Femme Collective highlight the badass female and non-binary talent, throughout the music industry.  Her DJ career took off completely naturally and organically, I am so excited to see Grace continue to grow and take off over the next few years!!

Blossom Caldrone is a music maker from Gloucestershire, attending Brit School a few years back. She is bright, vibrant and excellent at her craft, making tunes which are catchy and fun - I instantly fell in love with her wonderful personality and unique visual portrayal online. As well as being a musician, Blossom is also the founder of Diana Listens, an online blog which originated from weekly gig nights. 

As soon as I heard her latest single, Girlfriends, I knew that I must chat with Blossom - we had such a wonderful chat and it absolutely made my day. In this episode we talk about the importance of having a creative support network and creating your own opportunities, whether that be starting a podcast or founding your own blog to write about up and coming artists. Blossom speaks often about how if the opportunity isn’t there, all you have to do is make it yourself. Lizzie Knott and Rosie Smith are two very talented illustration artists, who I worked with for the creation of Noisy Women merch, which was released at the end of 2020.  With most of the collection now sold out, we wanted to record a podcast chatting through the collection and how the ideas came about.  Lizzie and Rosie are two individuals who I found because of the pandemic, we have been connected on Instagram for months, often chatting about our individual businesses and how we have been affected because of covid.

Lizzie Knott is an illustrator who recently graduated from Cambridge School of Art, receiving Highly Commended in the World Illustration Awards 2020: New Talent, Design, Product and Packaging.  Her work has been seen globally through articles for The BBC - she is a rising talent and I feel very honoured that her designs are being worn by so many of you!!

Rosie Smith is the founder of Lazy Disco, a Brighton based jewellery company.  Rosie is a very quirky and fun individual, creating unique designs from polymer clay.  Her small business, when I first discovered her, has since bloomed and exploded into a huge scale business, with her products selling out within minutes.  Being inspired by doodling, daydreaming and pop music, I was thrilled to work with her on the tote bag design.

I hope you love listening to this chat, it’s baffling to me that we haven’t yet hung out together in person.  We talk all about where these gals find their inspiration for their art, how they started and so much more.

Laviea Thomas is a music and culture writer for publications such as CLASH and Gigwise, but is also the founder of House of Wax, a zine and online space set up to celebrate creatives of colour.  I have known of Laviea for many years through the music scene in London, however we surprisingly have never met in person.  This did not stop us from having a wonderful conversation about everything music and culture related, discussing the highs and lows of working within a white male dominated industry.

This episode was a delight to record as it felt like I was chatting and catching up with an old friend.  We discussed everything from her true highlights of creating her first ever print run,  how hard she has had to work to be writing for multiple publications, as well as studying a creative degree at University.

Gabrielle is a fellow podcaster and music industry expert, with 6 years of experience under her belt.  Hailing from Scotland, Gabrielle worked for many years at Domino Records as a Regional Radio PR and Label Assistant, before moving on to VEVO, where she worked as part of the European Team as the Music and Talent Manager for the UK.  She founded her podcast, Bitesize Bodacious Babes last year and also shifted online when Covid hit, just like myself.  Our podcasts have a very similar ethos, demystifying the music industry and helping to inspire other women to get involved in the process.

We had such a wonderful chat and it was wonderful to talk to another Podcaster about how they work and run their ship.  Personally, I have not interviewed many other creatives who are working within this area of the industry, therefore discussing editing software and the nitty gritty of recording was a true pleasure.  Gabrielle and I also chat about her latest venture into UX/UI Design and how her career has shifted and turned over the last 10 years.

Melatrois consists of Lois Browne, Joy Warmann and Zoe Charlery, who host their own radio show on Reform Radio once a month, on a Tuesday between 12-2pm.  They are a group of down to earth and wonderful people who showcase incredible musical talent across genres.  I was introduced to the group through my housemate Nana and completely fell in love with the comfortable and familiar feel of their voices and show.

Individually however, Lois, Joy and Zoe are a powerhouse of talent, working with a huge array of talent within both the music and arts industries.   Lois works as a Label Assistant at London-based SA Recordings, the record label arm of Spitfire Audio.  Joy works as a European Project Manager at Secretly Group as well as hosting a monthly jam night with Imaginary Millions.  Zoe is currently researching for their MSc, but also working as a committee member of artist led initiative, Transmission Gallery and a Producer to Scottish based contemporary performance artist, Claricia Parinussa.

This episode was a delight to record, I highly recommend a listen.
