Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet whose hosts had to fight three other guys to host it: It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!

My name is Austin and I’m the Whovian, and these are my sons Corbin and Tripp and we’re the noobs!

This is the podcast that introduces a whole new generation to Doctor Who by watching an episode each week and discussing it from the perspective of a dad who’s seen it before, and two sons who haven’t.

Welcome to Episode 129 covering the 2013 Special The Five(ish) Doctors.

This is the one where the Doctor helps the Doctor, the Doctor, the Doctor, and the Doctor break onto the set of Doctor Who! Oh and steal their own costumes from a Doctor Who museum.

    Production notes

    * Story #3?* Originally aired November 23, 2013 * Written by: Peter Davison* Directed by: Peter Davison

    Cast

    * every-stinkin-body!

    Checklist

    * Name of the episode spoken in dialogue?* Surprisingly, no* Creature of the week* The Wikia names Steven Moffat as the Main Enemy!* Jiggery Pokery* TARDIS * Lots of smack talk about Eleven’s TARDIS control room* The Question/Doctor Who?* Baker referred to himself as the Sixth Doctor Who

    (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

    Other stuff we noticed

    * I almost cried when Davison’s kids said “You know, it could just be Matt Smith and David Tennant.” * There were EIGHT living Doctors at the time, and we only got 2 and a new made-up one!* The Fifth Doctor’s daughter was eating her ice cream with a celery stick* Radio show – who was your favorite Doctor? Peter Cushing. Controversial pick.* He did the 1960’s movies Dr. Who and the Daleks and Dalek’s Invasion Earth 2150AD.* McGann couldn’t make it to the protest because of “filming commitments.” He was doing The Night of the Doctor* I love Steven Moffat’s regeneration scene!* Seven recreated the sugar decision scene from the episode we just watched!* Good catch, Tripp!* They were hearing the music changes!* Costumes* Davison’s t shirt was his costume* McCoy was wearing a hat and carrying an umbrella* Baker’s* I desperately wish the scene of them as the shrouded statues was real! But alas, it was a different take that used production crew members.

    Who’s Who?

    * Do you think they were playing themselves, or their Doctors?

    Classic Who Connections

    * Olivia Coleman has been in just about everything since 2000. She co-stared in Broadchurch with David Tennant* Olivia Coleman was also in Eleventh Hour!* Georgia Moffett (Peter Davison’s daughter and also played Jenny in The Doctor’s Daughter) is seen eating ice cream with a large celery stalk* On the radio, the announcer talks about his Doctor being Peter Cushing. Peter Cushing played the Doctor in two Doctor Who movies in the 1960s that both involved the Daleks. Doctor Who and the Daleks and Daleks Invasion Earth -2050 AD) Terry Nation sold the movie rights for the characters of Doctor Who and the Daleks and that’s how they came to be made, but the debate has long dragged on by fans as to whether they are canon or not. In the movies the Doctor is not an alien but an old professor who created a time machine/spaceship called Tardis (no acronym). Steven Moffat apparently made them canon in a novelization of The Day of the Doctor where he reveals that the First Doctor allowed Cushing to star in mov...

This is the podcast that introduces a whole new generation to Doctor Who by watching an episode each week and discussing it from the perspective of a dad who’s seen it before, and two sons who haven’t.

Welcome to Episode 128, series 8 Christmas special: Last Christmas

This is the one where Cobb does the impossible by attempting to plant an idea inside of a person’s head… wait sorry that’s Inception. This is the one where the Doctor and Clara get slowly eaten by headcrabs from Half Life and get sent through five dream levels. Also we say goodbye to Danny… again. Sad Clara.

    Production notes

    * Story #253* Originally aired Christmas Day, 2014 to 8.28 million viewers* Written by: Steven Moffat* Directed by: Paul Wilmshurst

    Misc Trivia

    * We said in the last episode that it seemed like Clara was leaving. As it turns out, this was going to be her last episode. Moffat and Capaldi talked her into doing another season and she finally changed her mind very late in the game, perhaps as late as the read-through, which lead to a last minute change of the ending.* According to Moffat, they had a new companion in this episode. If you had to guess who it was, who would you guess?* Two fan theories…

    Cast

    * Professor Albert – Michael Troughton* Patrick Troughton’s son!* Ian the Elf – Dan Starkey!* This marks Dan’s third Christmas Special in a row. He was Strax in The Snowmen, Commander Skarr in The Time of the Doctor, then Ian in Last Christmas* In addition, this was Jenna Coleman’s third Christmas Special, appearing as an echo Clara in The Snowmen, then as original Clara in The Time of the Doctor and Last Christmas.* She’s the first companion to appear in 3!* Santa Claus – Nick Frost* Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul* Basically everything Simon Pegg has done that wasn’t Star Trek or Mission Impossible

    Checklist

    * Name of the episode spoken in dialogue?* Do you know why people get together at Christmas? Because every time they do, it could be their last. Every Christmas is last Christmas.* Who ya gonna call? Just one last time, huh? One last Christmas, as if your life depended on it, believe in Santa.* Creature of the week* Dream crab – Kantrofarri* The legend says “if you think about a dream crab, a dream crab is coming for you.* Curse you, Steven Moffat!* Stuff the Doctor loves* Jiggery Pokery* TARDIS * He called it a telephone kiosk* Psychic paper* Random * Needless sacrificial death* Attack Eyebrows* The Question/Doctor Who?* Jammie Dodger sighting* Running count – 4* Termy wermy* Trying to disprove beardy weirdy* Oh as the Doctor would say, it’s all a bit dreamy weamy

    Other stuff we noticed

    * It was a white Christmas in the time vortex!* Helman-Zeiglar test – the only reliable dream test I know* None of us knows we’re not dreaming. Not one of us, not one minute of our entire lives.

    (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

    Who’s Who?

    * Who is Santa?* I can commit several million housebreaks in one night while wearing a red suit and jingle bells, so yeah, I can get back into the infirmary.* You’re a dream who’s trying to save us? I’m Santa Claus, I think you just defined me.* Who is Clara?* She’s a racist, elfist.

  • 125.5 Seventh Doctor Primer

This is the one where Jared introduces us to the Seventh Doctor as we get ready for Remembrance of the Daleks.

    * Sylvester McCoy* Comedian before Doctor Who known on TV for doing kids shows Jigsaw, Tiswas and Vision On* First Serial Time and the Rani 1987 * Last Serial Survival 1989/Dimensions in Time 1993* Also in Doctor Who in 1996* He had three seasons, then the 30th special (a short benefit serial like Time Crash) and showed up for the TV movie to regenerate* Started with Melanie Bush (Mel) as a companion who carried over from the end of the Sixth Doctor’s time. Then he paired up with Ace McShane.* He was more of a mentor to Ace than a companion* Ace started calling him “Professor” as a joke and it stuck* Ace loves an explosive substance she invented called nitro-9. She said it’s “just like ordinary nitroglycerin, except it’s got a bit more wallop”* I think the show writers were going for family-friendly 80s punk. She is laughable by today’s standards, but she did a good job and is a fan favorite. * John Nathan-Turner is still the show runner (he started with the Fifth Doctor)*  This doctor was a bit like Monk or Inspector Clouseau. The defective detective trope* Roots in the Second Doctor and most closely related to the Eleventh Doctor in NuWho* Under his comedic surface there was a manipulative and Machiavellian undertone. The excuse was he did what he had to do to defeat evil. * He thought he was a good dresser* He almost always had his question mark umbrella with him. It was sort of like his sonic screwdriver but without any of the cool functionality* One of my favorite quotes from the Seventh Doctor, said to Mel as she was leaving: “Think about me when you’re living your life one day after another, all in a neat pattern. Think about the homeless traveler and his old police box, with his days like crazy paving.”* The Seventh Doctor’s final monologue what would be the final serial for some time: “There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea’s asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea’s getting cold. Come on, Ace. We’ve got work to do”

The Seventh Doctor was complex. He started off funny and goofy, but then he turned dark and manipulative towards the end. Some think the writers did this as they were revealing more about his past and personal life as they drew the series to a close.

In Remembrance of the Daleks we see Ace and the Doctor together, with the Doctor returning to the Coal Hill school in 1963. This is the start of the Seventh Doctor’s second season. It is Ace’s first full serial and the Doctor is starting to transition from clownish antics to a more serious persona.

Viewership was way down when McCoy started as the Doctor. By his second season, they saw higher ratings than they had in five years. But in his third and final season the ratings took a dive and the producers put the show on a hiatus that turned into cancellation….or was it?

    Production notes

    * Story # 251* Originally aired October 25 to 6.29 million viewers * Written by: Frank Cottrell Boyce* Directed by: Sheree Folkson

    Misc Trivia

    * The title comes from William Blake’s The Tyger

Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies. Burnt the fire of thine eyes?On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand, dare seize the fire? And what shoulder, & what art,Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat,What dread hand? & what dread feet? What the hammer? what the chain, In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread grasp, Dare its deadly terrors clasp! When the stars threw down their spears And water’d heaven with their tears: Did he smile his work to see?Did he who made the Lamb make thee?Tyger Tyger burning bright, In the forests of the night: What immortal hand or eye,Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?William Blake, The Tyger

    * In the scene where there’s a bus visible in the forest, there’s actually an ad for Series 8 of Doctor Who with Twelve and Clara on it. * It might be easy to write this off as a small mistake, but it’s a cardboard cutout that they placed in the forest!* You can see it in pics on this blog I found while googling it:

It works about like this.* One of the drawbacks of being the last of your species: no one to ask when your TARDIS won’t start

That’s not possible, unless it was eating stuff IN SPACE* What kind of creature is born pregnant and immediately gives birth?!

Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet that has an invisibility watch: It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!

Welcome to Episode 121 covering the Series 8 episode 6: The Caretaker

This is the one where the Doctor becomes a janitor, and Mr. Pink finds out who Clara really is while saving the world after dooming it first.

    Checklist

    * Name of the episode spoken in dialogue?* The Doctor ALMOST said it: I’m the new caretaker* It was said throughout the episode though* Can I just say I like “caretaker” much better than janitor and we should make a switch to this in America. * Creature of the week* Skovox Blitzer* Stuff the Doctor loves* Jiggery Pokery* Sonic* It has a setting (#41) that can blast out helicon energy

    Some serious helicon energy!

    * TARDIS * Apparently Clara can snap the doors closed now?

    Other stuff we noticed

    * I don’t think Adrian looked even remotely like Matt Smith

    Who’s Who?

    * Who is Danny Pink?* He’s NOT a PE teacher*  He’s also not a new teacher anymore. This episode apparently takes place at least a year after Into the Dalek because in that episode he was introduced as a brand new teacher. In this one, Courtney Woods parents refer to how he referred to her last year. * I imagine that the opening montage of vignettes is taking us through that year.* NERD ALERT! When he put on the invisibility watch, he was non-plussed that it wasn’t even a ring* How stupid do you think I am? I’m willing to put a number on it.* He did just save the whole world. Good start.* Who is Clara?* Her adventures with the Doctor are starting to interfere with her real life* Apparently she just like, KNOWS how to use the sonic now?* What were the others like, the ones before me? Did they let you get away with this* Who is the Doctor?* He lived among otters once* Never lose your temper in the middle of a door sign* Humans have an incredibly short lifespan. Frankly, you should all be a permanent state of panic. Tick tock, tick tock* He’s your DAD! He’s your space dad.* Danny made a crack about his eyebrows!* Upon entering the junkyard, The Doctor says “Home, Sweet Home.” His first incarnation parked the TARDIS in a junkyard near Coal Hill while Susan attended the school.
