  • Looming Tax Changes Potentially Catastrophic for Farm Families

Tax changes would be potentially catastrophic for farm families, and it’s an issue that affects every American. National Cattlemen's Beef Association Senior Executive Director of Government Affairs Danielle Beck talks to Chrissy Wozniak about the developments. Last week NCBA released a letter to House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committee urging them to consider the implications that changes to federal tax policy will have on family-owned agricultural businesses.

Nearly 330 trade associations representing family-owned food, agriculture and related businesses agree that, when drafting legislation to implement President Biden's "Build Back Better" agenda, it is critical that the “American Families Plan” must also support family farms and ranches. “Congress must consider the complex structure of family-owned agricultural businesses that serve as the backbone of rural economies; therefore, understand how changes to long-standing provisions in the tax code could be detrimental to the financial viability of these businesses as they transfer to the next generation,” said Senior Executive Director of Government Affairs Danielle Beck.

“This is not a partisan issue; in fact, it’s an issue that affects every single American. With more than 370 million acres expected to change hands in the next two decades, preserving long-standing provisions in the federal tax code is a win-win situation for producers and consumers alike. Whether their family has preserved the land for generations, or they are a beginning, veteran or minority farmer getting their start in the industry – without federal tax policy that supports a viable business climate for the next generation of producers, building on the environmental and economic contributions of today’s producers is impossible and risks compromising our nation’s ability to produce a safe, abundant and affordable food supply. The consequences of taxing family farms and ranches out of business completely undermines the 'Build Back Better' agenda.”

  • Phosphorus Removal is a Hot Topic for Farmers. What Can Biochar do for Regenerative Agriculture?

Gary Walker, founder of GAPS Ontario, joins Chrissy Wozniak to discuss the benefits of using biochar to remove phosphorus. GAPS Ontario bridges the gap between technology and clean water. GAPS provides a variety of services including water water treatment, phosphorus capture & recovery, and even golf course solutions.

Biochar is a highly adsorbent, specially-produced charcoal with unique properties originally used as a soil amendment. Simply put, biochar is a highly adsorbent, specially-produced charcoal originally used as a soil amendment. Scientists theorize biochar was first used in the Amazon Basin thousands of years ago where extensive regions of dark, highly fertile soil known as terra preta were discovered, revealing high concentrations of biochar and organic matter.

Similar to charcoal, biochar is produced using the ancient practice of heating wood or other plant material (biomass) with little to no oxygen. However, unlike charcoal, which is often used for cooking, biochar is made under specific conditions with the intent to be applied to soil as a means to increase soil fertility and agricultural yields, and sequester carbon to reverse global warming.

Other market uses of biochar are being discovered regularly as universities and large industrial partners conduct extensive research into this versatile material and its cation exchange properties. Biochar is thought to be the key component in a carbon-negative strategy to resolve several critical current ecological challenges.

  • How Can Traction Milling Prevent Lameness in Dairy Cattle? AGRITRAC's Tom Woodall Shares the Science

While the subject of barn flooring might seem cut-and-dry, the type of flooring you choose for your barn build can actually have a huge impact on your cattle’s health for years to come. Tom Woodall, President of AGRITRAC joins North American Ag’s Chrissy Wozniak to discuss the influence that your barn floor can have on overall dairy cattle herd health.

AGRITRAC’s Traction Milling plays an important role in lameness prevention on dairy farms across North America. It was invented to provide a solution to slippery barn floors that compromise the health and safety of the herd that lives on them. The patented procedure utilizes a unique grooving technique to create the safest concrete floor available. The traction milling process provides increased herd comfort through the anti-slip texture, which has been shown to lead to higher milk production as a result of reduced lameness and overall improved herd health.

Woodall shares the downfalls of the traditional slip-and-catch method of grooving and why that is no longer the most popular flooring option. Cattle health and wellbeing is at the forefront of every dairy farmers operation, and traction milling provides a solution for the common problem of low-traction that alternative flooring is known for.

  • House Agriculture Hearing Echoes NCBA Push for More Hook Space

The U.S. House Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock and Foreign Agriculture held a hearing to examine urgent challenges within the beef supply chain. After hearing testimony from agriculture economists, land-grant university faculty, and cattle industry stakeholders, many members of Congress echoed the National Cattlemen's Beef Association's (NCBA) longstanding call to expand processing capacity. Chrissy Wozniak of North American Ag speaks with Tanner Beymer, Director of Government Affairs & Market Regulatory Policy for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

During the Hearing members also noted the need for greater transparency in cattle markets to create conditions that support both a reliable, affordable supply of U.S. beef and the continued financial viability of American cattle farmers and ranchers.

"The roadblocks that are depressing profits for our cattle producers and endangering the steady supply of affordable beef have really captured the attention of lawmakers," said NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane. "The continued momentum we are seeing on expanding processing capacity, both on Capitol Hill and at USDA, is a positive sign. We are grateful to Chairman Costa and Ranking Member Johnson for prioritizing this issue. We look forward to continuing to work with members of the House Agriculture Committee to advance solutions like the Butcher Block Act that would alleviate some of the chokepoints that are hurting our producers."

Cattle industry concerns have seen increased attention recently from both sides of the aisle as NCBA has advocated for commonsense solutions that address the most urgent challenges facing producers. In recent months, NCBA has engaged with Congress and the administration to:

    •  Secure the introduction of legislation to help small, independent processors expand capacity and improve marketing options for cattle producers.
    • Reform the "Product of the USA" beef label in a way that benefits both consumers and producers.
    • Defend family farms, ranches, and rural communities against devastating proposed tax hikes.
    • Deliver critical progress on much-needed flexibility under hours-of-service regulations for livestock haulers.
    • Ensure that the "America the Beautiful" or 30x30 conservation plan prioritizes the input of agricultural producers and respects private property rights.
