The 2024-25 Wednesday In The Word study at North Conway Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina, is a chapter-by-chapter study through the book of 2nd Samuel.

The study is called 2nd Samuel: A Throne Established Forever and is taught by Senior Pastor Dr. Jay Worthington and Associate Pastor Will O’Brien.

The key to the book and the entire biblical meta-narrative is 2 Samuel 7:16, “Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” This divine promise marked the beginning of a covenant called the Davidic covenant, in which God promised an eternal throne to the house of David. Because of David’s faith, God did not treat David’s descendants as He had treated Saul’s. Sin would be punished, but David’s line would never be completely cut off. God’s unconditional promise to David would be fulfilled ultimately in David’s descendant, Jesus Christ. The covenant also included a continuing promise that the people of Israel would have a land of their own forever. An eternal King given for an eternal kingdom of an eternal people.

A continued study of the book of Colossians and the beginning of  Chapter 2. In this chapter, Paul starts to make the message more personal for the church. He shifts from stating that Jesus is Lord to emphasizing that Jesus is OUR Lord. This personal connection highlights that He has specifically called us to serve in His kingdom. In the first five verses of this chapter, Paul shares the work he is doing for the church in Colossae, and through his words, we receive a strong challenge about our own responsibilities here at North Conway.

As Paul concludes his opening remarks, he directly addresses the elephant in the room: he is writing this letter from jail. How can a man encourage a church to remain hopeful in Christ while he is enduring suffering for Christ? Paul’s teachings had much to share with the church in Colossae, and they hold significant relevance for us today regarding how and why we suffer. At this time each year, many of us turn our attention to making resolutions for the new year. We make promises about food, money, time, and family. But how many of us stop to think about our spiritual state as we are accessing our lives? Is it even beneficial to make spiritual resolutions once a year? Shouldn’t we be resolved to live for Christ each and every day? In today’s sermon, we will examine a lifetime resolution that Joshua made before the people of Israel.
