In New South Wales, Australia, at the entrance of Sydney Harbor, lies the North Head Quarantine Station. Established in the 1830s, this building was a flimsy line of defense protecting the Australian mainland from shipbound diseases. During its 30 years of activity, many hundreds of infected individuals died in agony within its walls.
