In this text, the Lord lays out six indictments of sinful people, in the form of "woes." These are followed by a warning of judgment which should rightly follow ("therefore"). God's warning is an implicit call to all who hear to repent before it is too late.

Isaiah warned that God would cut down the nation of Israel like a wild vineyard that bore no fruit. But he also foresaw the day when a new shoot would grow up into a mighty Branch that would bear much fruit and serve as a kind of wedding canopy that would cover the fruitful union of God and His People.
