In response to the disciples' question about the timing of God's judgment, Jesus begins by warning them that many events that people associate with cataclysmic judgment are not to be causes for worry on their part. Then He identifies two events would take place before the great destruction of Jerusalem. For generations, the nation of Israel had for the most part rejected the continued revelation God had given them. And with their rejection of Christ, God's cup of wrath was ready to be poured out on them. In Matthew 24 Jesus begins to describe when all these things would take place. We are to seek the good of Babylon, but to long for the heavenly Jerusalem. This passage helps us to think about living in those two kingdoms while we wait for the consummation. In times of personal, national, or even global upheaval, God is a refuge for His People, a very present help in trouble. The church is a serene city fed by springs of living water, untroubled by the raging storms surrounding her. She dwells secure because her God is in her midst.
