Jesus teaches about the swearing of oaths, and urges His followers to utter truthfulness and faithfulness.

-Do not commit adultery.- These words articulate the timeless moral law of God. But those who would justify themselves for their own obedience to the outward form of the law should carefully examine whether they have really kept the heart and intent of the directive. This sermon examines Jesus' interpretation of that commandment and what we must do about it.

Christ could have chosen to snatch His disciples out of this world immediately, but He left them for His own good purpose. Because of what Christ has done for us, believers are urged to draw near to God, holding on to their faith in Him. This sermon focuses on one of the great means of God's preservation of His People -- the ministry of the church. This passage reminds us that church is not just a luxury, but a means of our eternal salvation.

In this passage Jesus describes the kinds of people that are blessed by God. Perhaps surprisingly, He begins not with godliness and righteousness, but with brokenness and humility. God's grace then turns the wretched person's situation upside down.

Matthew recognized a real significance to Jesus' move from Judea into Galilee, making reference to a prophecy regarding -Galilee of the nations.- Consider God's plan for the global expansion of Christ's Kingdom, and your own part in that worldwide mission.

Much of the old nation of Israel, God's -firstborn son,- proved to be no true children of God at all. Rather than being like the Holy One, they proved to be like their father the devil. But One came on the scene who professed to be -the unique Son of God.- Would he prove to be a true Son like His Father- Matthew highlights these two accounts as the answer.
