Christianity affects all our relationships -- especially our family ones. In this verse, Peter addresses husbands, giving them a command, leading them to helpful considerations, and issuing them an serious caution.

God's instruction to wives is to be subject to their own husbands -- even husbands who are not what they ought to be. How can a wife possibly do this- In this passage, Peter cites a key attitude that unlocks this kind of godly submission.

This evangelistic sermon examines the uniqueness of the sufferings of Christ. -He Himself- suffered in a way that was substitutionary, purposeful, and effective.

Peter urges Christian servants to be submissive to their masters, even if it means suffering. Suffering injustice is something many of us face, not just servants. God calls us to trust His judgment and to follow Christ, not retaliating, but doing good -- even to our enemies.

Christians are called to live honorably in this world for the glory of God. This includes submission to providential authority -- including human government -- even though it may mean suffering for the cause of Christ.

The life of Christ is the pattern for His followers -- first suffering, then glory. Peter reminds his readers that Christ's rejection and suffering was not unplanned, or out of God's control. This then becomes the ground of encouragement for Christians who are suffering at the hands of evildoers.

When we come to Christ, they build their lives on the only solid foundation -- Jesus Christ, the Cornerstone of God's New Temple. He was a stone rejected and crucified by men, but raised and honored and set in place by God. Peter sees this as the paradigm for God's people, the -living stones.- Their fate is His -- rejection by men, but ultimately honor from God.

This sermon examines the implications that Peter draws from our being born again. We are admonished to grow out of our sinful attitudes towards other Christians and to grow up into our salvation through the Word of God.

Christians are converted to a love for Christ and His people. They are born again into the eternal family of God. So they are exhorted in this text to love one another earnestly and sincerely.
