As we begin a new series today entitled “Kindness in the Land,” we will be exploring the exploits of the Israelites after they entered the Promised Land.  One of the first narratives that we will be exploring is in Joshua 2, and a woman named Rahab.  Rahab, as we will see, is one of the most unlikely of characters to help the Israelites.

As we close out our series today entitled “Kindness in the Wilderness,” we close with this theme of holiness.  Over the past few weeks we have been exploring the 40-years of wilderness wanderings of the Israelites.  They had been punished by GOD for their rebellion and lack of faith, and now that the older generation has died off, Moses is instructing the next generation on what GOD desires as they enter the Promised Land.  In chapter 18 of Deuteronomy, Moses lays out plainly and clearly what they are not to do when they enter the land.  What they are to do is to remain faithful and set apart for GOD and His purposes.  Though they may be prone to influences by the surrounding pagan nations, they are to remain steadfast and focused on the LORD their GOD.  Let’s take a look at his instructions to them:

Today we come to a passage of Scripture from the book of Numbers in the Old Testament.  Again we pick up the narrative during the time the Israelites have been punished to wander in the wilderness for 40-years just outside of the Promised Land.  The passage that we will be taking a closer look at today is only one instance of many when the Israelites grumbled and complained against GOD and Moses due to the harsh conditions of the wilderness they were condemned to wander.  In Numbers 20 we see, however, not only were the people complaining about not having water, we see Moses and Aaron – in their anger toward the people – disobeying GOD’s command to bring water to the people by speaking to a rock.  Let’s take a closer look:

One cannot lead unless they first learn to follow.

Today we begin a new series entitled “Kindness in the Wilderness,” and we will be exploring GOD’s kindness toward the Israelites during their 40-years of wilderness wanderings, as described in the Old Testament books of Numbers and Deuteronomy.  Though the punishment was given by GOD, the 40-years of wilderness wandering was a result of the people’s rebellion against GOD and all He was offering them in the Promised Land. 

We pick up the ongoing narrative today in Numbers 9, where Moses describes how GOD led them throughout those 40 years.  Let’s take a look…

Tradition states that “early African converts to Christianity were earnest and regular in private devotions.  Each one reportedly had a separate spot in the thicket where he would pour out his heart to God.  Over time the paths to these places became well worn. As a result, if one of these believers began to neglect prayer, it was soon apparent to the others.  They would kindly remind the negligent one, ‘Brother, the grass grows on your path.’”

Closing out his letter, James explains the importance of prayer and it’s place within the community of faith.  Let’s take a closer look:
