Have you ever heard the phrase, “God’s timing is perfect?” If so, how many of you struggle with that? If I’m being completely honest, I do. I don’t like to wait. I don’t like to not have what I want when I want it, or do what I want when I want to. However, there’s a benefit to waiting, especially waiting on GOD and His timing. Consider the following examples from the Bible: Abraham and Sarah, Joseph, David, and Hannah.
As we learned last week through Isaiah’s prophecy in chapter 9 of his book in the Old Testament, the long-awaited Messiah would come as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, but not for another 700+ years. And today, we come to the fulfillment of that promise of GOD in Isaiah’s prophecy as we explore the birth narrative of Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel:

Have you ever had to wait for something so long that you just couldn’t stand it?
Warren Wiersbe makes the observation, “The ability to calm your soul and wait before God is one of the most difficult things in the Christian life. Our old nature is restless...the world around us is frantically in a hurry. But a restless heart usually leads to a reckless life.”[1]
Today, we look again to GOD’s Word to understand the story of love, redemption, and waiting. In doing so, we turn to an Old Testament prophecy in Isaiah’s writings that foreshadows a specific time in history when the Messiah would come to save the lost and offer the gift of eternal life to all who believed in Him. Written some 700 years before Jesus’ birth, Isaiah writes…

Today we come to another passage from the Apostle Paul that explores the idea of suffering. Paul spends a lot of time on this subject due to the nature of the culture in which the early church took root. It was a culture that was not kind to Christians or Christianity. So Paul writes on this subject quite a bit for the purpose of encouraging fellow believers to stay strong in the Faith and to know that there is hope in the journey through the pain and trials we experience.

Today we come to a passage of Scripture from one of the Apostle Paul’s letters in 2 Corinthians. Paul and his traveling companions have been on their missionary journeys through various different cities and towns, and have experienced multiple set-backs and troubles along the way. They’ve had their lives threatened, their reputations marred, and have experienced bodily harm along the way. When Paul writes 2 Corinthians, he does so from this perspective, however, he also desires to comfort the Corinthian Church after having sent a letter of stern rebuke to them earlier (1 Corinthians). It’s in this vein of consolation and encouragement that Paul pens the following words at the beginning of this new letter to them:

We begin a new series today entitled “Good Grief,” and our subject matter is… you guessed it: Grief. But what is grief in its simplest form according to the dictionary?
As a noun grief means – “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret.”[1]
As we explore grief today, I thought it fitting to look to Jesus’ words of blessing and comfort in the Sermon on the Mount, specifically the Beatitudes.
