Join us for Pastor David O’Leary’s sermon "Nobody Likes Bad News” at North Park Church in Wexford, PA. This message delves into the glory of Jesus Christ. We hope you'll join us as we deepen our understanding and grow in our relationship with Him.

As Amos continues to speak of God's judgment, he models what it is to be "grieved over the ruin" of the people (6:6). Not everything we have to say to the world is pleasant. When we give the bad news of God's judgment, our tone needs to match the message: speak of sin and judgment with sorrow.

The Day of the Lord brings judgment. God's people are not merely to seek the Day of the Lord. We are to seek justice and righteousness so they flow freely like life-giving waters.

Amos calls for repentance. This is not a repentance that will turn back God's judgment. Nor is it a repentance that will convert the whole nation. It is a repentance that seeks God's grace for a preserved remnant. This grace is ultimately found in Christ, who has passed through the judgment of God and is a saving refuge for his people.

The Lord has patiently and persistently called His people to repentance, but they have refused to return to Him. Therefore, the Lord Himself will draw near to His people to judge. God has drawn near in His Son Jesus Christ, crucified and raised from the dead. As He brings God's glorious judgment, He also gives life to those who turn to Him.

Covenant privilege before God places his people under heightened scrutiny and a sharper warning. His people will be the arena in which God displays his perfect justice and righteousness. This is an opportunity to consider the highest degree of God's holiness, righteousness, and justice expected of, and displayed in, his Son, Jesus Christ. Closeness to a righteous God is good news only when we are brought near through this Son, our Savior.

Amos turns his attention to the sin of God's people. Our task will be to reflect deeply on the nature of our own sin as God sees it. The purpose is to grasp the comprehensive call to repentance, as well as our desperate dependence on Christ to make all things new.

Amos opens with a survey of people groups whose sin the Lord sees and will punish. The main point will be for us to appreciate that sin deserves punishment from the Lord. We will then apply this to ourselves in two ways: (1.) we are guilty of the same kind of sin of the world (2.) our forgiveness depends on Jesus suffering the punishment that this kind of sin deserves.

The same Spirit who gifts us differently as members of the body of Christ also gifts us differently as a church called to carry out the Great Commission. We depend most upon the Spirit when we bear witness to the gospel in Word and Deed according to the ways he has uniquely gifted us.
