LEDE: [As of 2:30PM on Monday, 3/9/26] We’re awaiting a final debate in the state House on what supporters call the “millionaires tax”. It would be Washington’s first-ever income tax, taking nearly 10 percent from every dollar individuals make over a million. The Astoria Column, which was built in 1926 to celebrate settlement of the Pacific Northwest, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. As Kristian Foden-Vencil reports, it was supposed to be one of a dozen majestic monuments on a grand railway tour.
