For decades, Anderson Hay was one of the nation’s leaders in forage exports. But now, the Ellensburg-based company is seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The news has swathed through the heart of the agricultural industry in the Columbia Basin [which spans Washington state and Oregon].

Don Schilling [SHHH-ill-ing, rhymes with billing] is the president and owner of WESCO [WES-co] International. That’s another hay exporter also based in Ellensburg.

Washington’s last remaining coal-burning power plant was required to shut down at the end of this month [DEC].

A deal announced Tuesday will keep it operating, only with a new fuel: natural gas.
