A group of experts and laypeople have advised the federal government and state of Washington on the Hanford site for over 30 years.
But yesterday [on Wednesday, August 12], the Hanford Advisory Board was informed it would be significantly diminished. The group is made up of about 70 people – including alternates. By October first, there will be about 20 people on the board.
The U.S. Department of Energy made the announcement. The new members will only represent themselves.
Susan Leckband [LEK-band] is a former board chair. She says transparency at Hanford is essential for public trust.
