A chemical called 6PPD-quinone [quin-KNOWN] found in stormwater runoff is known to kill coho salmon on contact. It’s a byproduct from a preservative used in car tires.

Now, local researchers are collaborating with private industry and federal scientists from the US Geological Survey to find a replacement chemical.

That work is threatened by more than $500-million dollars in cuts to USGS in President Trump’s Budget.

About 12-hundred scientists work in the biological arm of the United States Geological Survey, known as the Ecosystems Mission Area. President Trump’s budget would likely eliminate their work nationwide, if passed as proposed – including some that’s crucial to saving salmon in Puget Sound. Washington state agencies and workforce organizations are reaching out Thursday to help federal workers who have lost their jobs.

In the United States, about four and a half million direct care professionals work with seniors and people with disabilities, according to a nonprofit that tracks those numbers. In Washington and Idaho, that work is happening every day. N-W-P-B’s Rachel Sun followed a Lewiston man and one of his caregivers to show the role those professionals play.
