December 08, 2015Unsettled Mountainside Rock-AirNot long ago, on my birthday in November 2015, I was out wandering the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie Wilderness (as one does) and thought, ooooooo..... lots of great places to pull over record some Pure Mountain Air™. Now, it had snowed just a week ago, the first substantial snow in the Cascades since the previous year (2015 wasn't a good year for the Cascades). And it was warming up. Loose gravel mountainsides, scabs, essentially had water seep in and freeze. Now they were melting in the brilliant autumn sun. That meant a) any ambient recordings were going to have a continual white noise background of meltwater in the background, and b) any ambient recordings were going to have a continual parade of tumbling rocks falling off of these now-loosened mountainsides. Unsettling, to say the least. Here's an excerpt (edit: a very long excerpt).recording miscellany:Sound Devices 702mid/ pressure: MKH8020side/ gradient: MKH30...more17minPlay
