The prerequisite to being a disciple of Jesus is knowing that you are broken and in need of a Savior. Knowing that we are broken does not take a stretch of the imagination to believe. But it takes faith to accept what the gospel proposes: That God can redeem our brokenness, He is redeeming our brokenness, and we can have the courage to step into that redemptive process.

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to continually kill off sin, yet for so many of us, that is not a practice of our lives. One of the most powerful spiritual disciplines for eradicating sin in a disciple’s life is the discipline of confession.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:22

The incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of God in Jesus are key tenants of doctrine to the Christian faith, yet there is one element that is often left unaddressed: The return of Jesus Christ. Christ has come and He will return. So how should we live in light of His coming return?

Sin has plagued humanity since the fall. Along with sin often comes crippling addiction. Sin makes us addicts of self-destructive behaviors. If statistics are true, then most disciples of Jesus have had some sort of struggle with addiction, yet if the gospel is true, then there is hope that any addiction can be broken.

As great as the world is, there is still so much chaos, pain, and despair. Often the future doesn’t look better, but instead seems awfully dark. Yet the good news that Jesus and the Church has declared is that there is a Kingdom coming that is better than any place we have lived before. Actually, every dream and hope for a good future, is a longing for the Kingdom Jesus promises to one day establish. God has a plan to rebuild creation. That Kingdom will soon become realized, so we must live differently knowing what is to come.

The 17th century monk, Brother Lawrence, experienced an incredible proximity to God through a constant, abiding conversation with the Holy Spirit. Lawrence did what Jesus said all disciples should do: He learned the art of abiding in or practicing the presence of God.

The whole of Scripture reveals increasing proximity to God in humanity’s relationship with Him. We go from us with God, to God with us, and now the Church has what we’ve been waiting for. We have the incredible gift of God in us. We must learn what that means and what is required of us to have this degree of intimacy with God.
