  • Tools - The Good, The Bad, The Useless
You could spend a lifetime and a fortune on kitchen equipment. So you don't do that, we like to review all those tools to outfit your cooking world. So we'll do the heavy lifting and you can just listen. We're pretty particular about what we consider to be necessary because a lot of times the articles include items that pay for space to be included. We do not receive any kind of money for what we say, although we're open to getting some coin! What you get from us is opinion, pure and unadulterated, and you know we have a lot of opinions. So in today's episode, we talk about everything from vegetable peelers to fish spatulas. We even offer up some show and tell on our YouTube channel so if you want to see us in action, head on over to @thegirlcancook on YouTube. We even talk about some extra tools (not included in the @SeriousEats article) that we personally find to be useful in our own kitchens.Enjoy episode number 252! You can listen almost anywhere you get your podcasts, like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Thanks for listening and please subscribe, rate and review!

  • Noodling Around
If you've never heard of noodling... More with Tess Maune, award winning journalist from the CBS affiliate in Tulsa, KOTV. Tess specializes in outdoor and wildlife reporting and she puts her money where her mouth is. She hunts everything! She fishes and is also a noodler. A what?Noodling is not new, believe it or not. It was not created by some crazy guy who uttered "hold my beer" before sticking his hand in a dark underwater hole. Also known as hand-fishing, noodling has been around since the late 1700s and is the technique of grabbing catfish during spawning out of a rock hole with your "bare" hands. Tess describes the finer points of noodling to us as well as sharing the largest catfish she has ever noodled (it was almost as big as she is).We also talked hunting feral hogs, deer rutting, field dressing and then of course, eating and preparing the meat.Hunting is a way of limiting the population of animals that can be invasive and damaging to the environment like feral hogs or creating a healthier and disease-free existence for the rest of the herd.Listen to today's episode and learn more than you could ever imagine about wildlife as we finish our conversation with Tess Maune. You can listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Please subscribe, rate and review. We appreciate it!

  • It's Our 250th Episode!
We're celebrating our 250th Episode with a special guest, Tess Maune, an award-winning journalist from the CBS affiliate in Tulsa.Tess is a news anchor but also the station's wildlife and outdoor reporter and we thought it would be fun to talk about things we know absolutely nothing about...foraging for edibles in the wilds of Oklahoma.Tess shared her knowledge of mushroom (the kind you eat) hunting and cooking as well as finding wild greens (that can kill you if you don't cook them properly). She tells us about her favorite wild meal as well as lots of other interesting things like the culture surrounding mushroom hunting and more. There was so much to talk about that we did a second episode with Tess to talk specifically about hunting and the very special sport of noodling. Listen to the entire super interesting episode and our 250th on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Please subscribe, rate and review. Thanks for listening!

  • The Pricey Pantry Part Deux
If you didn't get enough of pricey pantry items, we are back to finish up the list with lots of opinions, again! But first, we have to tell you about another podcast we absolutely love...@ivehaditpodcast with Jennifer Welch and Angie "Pumps" Sullivan. And these gals have Had It with so many things that also drive us crazy. So if you have a great sense of humor and high tolerance for explicit language, you will love these two.Now...on to the pricey pantry. These items, in general, are not things that are going to necessarily improve your cooking so we're a bit skeptical of most but there are a few here and there that could up your cooking game. Certainly, they are not necessary items for your pantry.Natalia does explain why she's a sucker for good packaging and I share my love for dark and oily coffee beans. It's a fun exploration of different kinds of things you could add to your pantry but are they worth it? You be the judge. We certainly were and are! Thanks for listening and please subscribe, rate and review our little podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen.Next episode is 250!

  • But Will It TikTok?
I'm going to start right here with a "disclaimer". We encountered operator error in our first attempt to videotape our episode. Actually, it was me. I missed a setting but we have fixed it and the rest of our episodes should be available on YouTube soon. The good news is the audio recording quality is much better so very happy with that. Now on to the topic at hand. TikTok is controversial yet probably won't be going anywhere anytime soon. In the meantime, we're going to jump on some of the food trends it seems to be responsible for. In true Not A Single Fork form, we poke a lot of holes in the trends but let's get real...there's not much new here. We touch on 11 TikTok food trends that may or may not be trends. You be the judge because we certainly are. Everything from a meringue cookie to Pasta alla Vodka. Nothing to see here at least as far as we're concerned. I think you'll get a kick out of us kicking the trends in the butt. Laugh along with us!Listen wherever you get your podcasts and we'll have some video for you next week. Thanks for subscribing, rating and reviewing!

  • Why Canned Tomatoes Should Be In Your Pantry
What's in your pantry? Before we knew what the pandemic was, we had planned a tour of the local groceries and farmers markets but COVID had another plan so...we toured our kitchen pantries and actually had a great time.Since then, actually even before that, I had and have a thing about stocking your pantry so you always have something to eat even when there's nothing to eat. Today's episode is devoted (mainly) to one of those items that I ALWAYS have in my pantry - Canned Tomatoes. We not only tell you all about the different ways you can buy tomatoes but the best canned tomatoes and what's so important about them. How you are going to use them is really key. Are the tomatoes going to be the star of the show or are they simply a supporting character? Important considerations and it will impact how much you're willing to pay per can. In deciding on the "best" canned tomato, you have to think about balance because tomatoes can be overly acidic and then you have to do a lot more work on your dish than you may have originally planned or know how to do. We actually make some suggestions about how to fix the acid!We have our usual digressions into the world of prank phone calls, sleeping porches and being born in the 1900's. We even take on the fresh vs canned debate.Lots of fun conversation for you today (and in every episode!).Thanks for listening on your favorite podcast platform. Please subscribe, rate and review!

  • Do You Really Need To Cook That?
It's Friday again (we love Fridays) and there's just something about it being Friday including, a new podcast episode and, oh yeah, the weekend! In today's episode, we take another one of those list-y type articles that everyone loves. This time we're speaking to all you home cooks out there. Like we aren't always talking to you guys!Anywho...today's topic is 18 Things That Chefs Think You Should Know How To Cook. I love a challenge and we're taking on this dare with almost every podcast now. Debunking, demystifying and generally, throwing shade on all the "shoulds" out there. So, although I do agree with some of these dishes. A lot of them made us say "what?" and why would you need to know how to cook that?No spoilers but a couple of the weird ones...black bean dip and filetto di pomodoro. On that second one, they could have just said tomato sauce but technically, it's just the meaty part of the tomato. In any event, here they are...the 18 things you "should" know how to cook and our many opinions about that. Thanks for listening. Please rate and review wherever you listen to us.See you next Friday.

  • Beyond Corned Beef and Cabbage
It's all about St. Patrick's Day today because well, it's St. Patrick's Day!So get out your green beer and your best Irish jig and join us in today's episode. We have a great Irish pub here called Kilkenny's and it puts on a true celebration to honor the day. Natalia shares her participation in that and then we get into 11 Things You Didn't Know About St. Patrick's Day (thanks again, Buzzfeed!). Did you know there were no snakes in Ireland so he couldn't have driven them out? I didn't get a chance to share that the snakes symbolized the Protestant Irish by the way (of which I are one).Anywho...we get into a discussion of Irish food and drink and Natalia starts wondering who I really am. You'll have to listen for that one, no spoilers here. Colcannon, seared salmon and Irish butter are topping our lists of delicious food to eat. Finally, we try to figure out why leprechauns are associated with the day. Turns out they're drunks who sneak into your basement. Who knew? Those topics and so much more in this week's episode. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts.
