A note: this chapter is very philosophical and in some places, difficult to understand. She is focused on how love can heal as long as we allow ourselves to both authentically love and be loved by others (remember, ALL kinds of love, not just romantic love).

A note: This chapter focuses on death. I believe it to be especially impactful right now, but it also may trigger strong feelings as you listen, especially if you have been impacted by death recently. Grief is a normal, necessary process in which we work through loss of relationships, things, or experiences, but we live in a society that does not encourage the healthy expression of that work. I think this chapter is one of the most valuable of this book, but do be aware that it will impact different people in different ways, depending on our unique lived experiences.

A reminder that hooks first published this book in 1999, and her tendency when talking about romantic relationships is to emphasize heterosexual relationships. In addition, she is writing through her personal lens and referring to her personal experiences as a Black feminist writer. While not everything she says will apply to you, focus on what she is saying that can be applied to you. If something makes you uncomfortable, ask yourself why before making a decision to consider it, accept it, or discard it.
