This week we dive back into the world of the Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) movement. A church that many call a cult. We speak more specifically this time about their homes for "troubled teens". Some of these teens sent to these homes needed mental health counseling, some were being "ungodly", and others sent away for simple things such as smoking a cigarette. Regardless of the reasons we learn this week that these homes were at best ill equipped to help and at worse an abusive place that brutally punished and terrorized those they were asked to help. I talk with Amanda Householder who was featured in the documentary "Let Us Prey" that exposed IFB for what it is. She grew up in the troubled teens homes that were AGAPE and Circle of Hope not necessarily because she was a troubled teen herself, but because her parents (now charged with over 100 crimes) ran the facilities. This is a powerful chat.

Sandy was just an ordinary citizen with no special training or resources who uncovered a scandal. This week I speak with Sandy Rosenthal who shares her riveting account of one woman’s battle to expose a massive coverup after the Army Corps of Engineers’ defective floodwalls broke during Hurricane Katrina and created a catastrophe. This is an inspiring David and Goliath story prompting many to refer to Sandy as the "Erin Brockovich" of levees.

Sandy Rosenthal founded the non-profit Levees.org in 2005. The group focuses on educating the public that the flooding of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina was due to federal engineering mistakes, not the wrath of nature.

Her book, Words Whispered in Water, is about how––against all odds––she altered the national narrative about the flooding disaster.

Sandy’s powerful message is bringing to light a mostly unknown yet dangerous situation in many parts of our country and she’s an inspiration on how to truly mobilize citizen participation.

This week was an extra special interview as I interview TV writer, Stan Zimmerman, a man who has written for some of the biggest shows of the last 40 years. He wrote for shows like Gilmore Girls and Roseanne, both shows with a huge cult following. My personal favorite and ultimate "cult following" show The Golden Girls a show he was a writer for in the legendary first season of the show. We talk about Stan's upbringing and his love for TV at a young age (funny story there!), working with some of TV's biggest leading ladies (AKA Bea Arthur and BETTY FREAKING WHITE), and his current work with some really impactful plays. This interview was truly amazing and I am excited for you to hear it!

This week I speak with Afarin Bellisario about the the country of Iran and how it is much different than what many Westerns think. Ms. Bellisario grew up in Tehran in a family with its feet in the past and its head in the future: whereas her grandmothers could barely read, Afarin’s university-educated father and uncles were prominent members of Iran’s new technocratic elite.

Upon receiving a Ph.D. (and a subsequent MBA) from MIT, she has worked for firms such as Intel, Analog Devices, and Raytheon. Today, Afarin consults, teaches, and mentors young ventures. But writing has been a passion. In 2013, her essay “Movies with My Aunt” was published in the anthology Love & Pomegranates. The Wall Street Journal and The Boston Globe have published several of her op-eds, and she writes regularly about the clash between tradition and modernity on Medium. We talk largely about the culture in Iran and her recently published fiction book "Silenced Whispers" that shares history and culture of Iran in an easily digestible story.

Born and raised on the Gold Coast of Australia, my guest this week Chloe Styler was introduced to country music at a young age. Spending her teenage years teaching herself guitar and writing songs in her bedroom, Chloe released her debut EP in her early twenties. Chloe now finds herself gently pushing the barriers of country music with her distinct pop country sound and making waves internationally.

Since releasing her first project in 2017, Chloe has delivered multiple alluring singles that have earned her over 270,000 streams across all platforms, nominations at the Queensland Music Awards and Gold Coast Music Awards, and finalist status in the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition.

Chloe Styler’s music is forward thinking and unique, and her new music pushes the boundaries that little bit further. This year will see Chloe release a slew of singles recorded at Station West Recording Studios and produced by Grammy-award winning engineer and producer, Luke Wooten (Brad Paisley/Dierks Bentley). These tunes are set to break new and exciting international ground for this quickly rising country star.
