  • Solving Tennis Elbow

Take the mystery out of tennis elbow. Let's explain what tennis elbow really is. It is an overuse syndrome where a body part is used beyond its physiological boundaries where it can fail to serve its' intended purpose. So if a muscle's job was to bend the wrist backward and move it to the outside when called upon to do so it may not be done as smoothly as you would like. when a muscle behaves in less than ideal way it becomes what is known as dysfunctional. The dysfunctional muscle spreads its' inherent dysfunctionality to surrounding muscles it works in conjunction with. This results in your tennis elbow problem starts to affect a more widespread area if left untreated.

The muscle called Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis is the primary muscle involved in Tennis Elbow. You may be surprised to learn that carpenters, plumbers, and painters also get a fairly high rate of tennis elbow. Even more interesting is that tradesmen usually do not play tennis. What they have in common with tennis players id that they use their wrist to bend backward and out to the side. This is the distinct action of the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis. The muscle will extend the wrist and abduct the wrist at the same time. This is quite a unique motion. when we overdo that particular motion the muscle becomes dysfunctional as previously stated.

What goes wrong in the muscle. The muscle has only so much tensile strength. If you go past its' normal limits it begins to weaken because its' strength is diminished. You are asking a muscle to do more than it physically can. The muscle will respond to the extra demands but will not work efficiently. Pain is your body's way of saying that something is wrong. Your body will let you know that your elbow is not going to work properly when asked to do more then it can.

How would you like to deal with tennis elbow problem? You can tell the brain there is no problem on the physical level by medicating the situation. The brain stops receiving input so while you feel the problem is gone it may be getting worse. So before you start popping those Aleve and Advil pills think is it going to fix your problem or cover it up? You may be lulled into thinking that the absence of pain means their is no problem. You are merely shutting off that communication between the damaged body part and your brain. The muscle only has so much to give before it fails.

I would urge you to consider some alternatives to the self-medicating route. Joint mobilization will allow for reduced stress on the elbow. What is a joint mobilization? It is a chiropractic treatment that restores function to the elbow in this case by reducing the subluxation. A subluxation is where normal biomechanical integrity is lost by displacement of that body part. If the elbow has undue stress put onto it the three bones of the arm the humerus, radius, and ulna will subluxate. There will be a distortion of the joints' normal properties. The Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis crosses the elbow to do its job of extending and abducting the wrist. So it would make sense that when the elbow subluxated it will put stress onto the muscles that are near it.

You will do your tennis elbow a world of good. Imagine playing tennis without pain or turning a wrench under somebody's sink without pain. I trust that you have found this helpful. Feel free to pass this on or leave a comment below.

  • Laser For Back Pain Does It Work?

What is Cold Laser Therapy Helped my low back pain

Cold laser therapy is also known as photobiomodulation. It's a big word, but it carries a big punch when you are in pain. Any pain condition like low back pain, tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, migraines you name it can be helped with laser therapy. The laser stimulates the production of ATP. Our cells require ATP to produce energy. When our soft tissue is injured or hurt, ATP production falls off. The laser light therapy will help spark the cell to produce more ATP. If you can understand photosynthesis for plants you can understand how cold laser can produce energy for the cells to help repair and regrow damaged soft tissue.
The treatment is painless and only takes a few minutes. A Class IV or above laser is recommended for optimal results in treating your pain. Core Health uses cold laser to help treat low back pain, tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, headaches, and migraines. Of course this in addition to the chiropractic care and physical therapy we provide our patients. Give us a call at 203-656-3636 today to learn how we might help you with cold laser and your low back pain, tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, headaches, migraines.

  • PEMF for Neuropathic Pain Neuropathy@Core Health

Neuropathy and Chronic Nerve Pain sufferers often have nowhere to turn to for help. Medications like Lyrica, Cymbalta, and GabaPentin work in a small number of cases. Then their effectiveness gradually starts to decrease Where do the people with diabetic nerve pain or chemo-induced nerve pain turn to? Surely opioids may help in the short term but bring a whole host of comorbidities with them. If you are looking for some hope and help with your neuropathy, the answer may just be Neuropathy@CoreHealth.

Dr. Brian McKay has developed quite a following helping people with a unique type of peripheral neuropathy treatment. Chances are you know what neuropathy feels like if you need more information about the different types of neuropathy the inside pages of the web site go into detail. If you are looking for a neuropathy medication from Neuropathy@CoreHealth you are in the wrong place. Our peripheral neuropathy treatment is a very special program that is broken down into several components.

    Nutritional Neuropathy Protocol

People with neuropathy, be it from diabetes, chemotherapy or autoimmune causes have diminished capacity from a nutritional standpoint. Neuropathy@CoreHealth utilizes specific supplements to help affected nerves and blood vessels. These nutrients help stabilize the body internally. Dr. McKay believes that you can not treat peripheral neuropathy unless there is a strong nutritional component that we deliver. Most neuropathy sufferers are aware of the need for increased B-Vitamins. We do not stop there our recommended supplements include Magnesium as well as Nitric Oxide boosters to further enhance our results.

    Vascular Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment

When we enhance blood flow the tissue can respond faster. The typically prescribed neuropathy medications do not address blood flow. Neuropathy@CoreHealth addresses blood flow using state of the art Near-InfraRed light therapy. The totally painless application of near-infrared light allows for angiogenesis. If you were wondering angiogenesis is where new blood vessels are created. The greater the blood flow the more likely the person with peripheral neuropathy will receive benefits from neuropathy treatment.

    Cold Laser Neuropathy Therapy

Neuropathy@CoreHealth uses Class IV Cold Laser to stimulate the cells of the body to become more efficient. It does so by firing up the mitochondria of the cell, this is where cells get their energy. So by enhancing the energy center we can give the body mor of what it needs but has a hard time producing- energy. Cold Laser is applied locally to the hands and feet of all neuropathy cases we treat. We feel it is an important step that ensures help for our neuropathy patients.

PEMF Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field Therapy

Neuropathy@CoreHealth has been using PEMF for several years. As far as we know we are the only neuropathy treatment centers doing so. We have it to be a valuable tool. PEMF therapy uses bursts of low-level electromagnetic radiation to heal damaged tissues and bone, to relieve injury-related pain, and even to stimulate organs.

  • Chiropractic Stages of Soft Tissue Healing

Soft tissue healing occurs in 4 stages. I would like to explain how chiropractic care positively affects the resolution of various types of pain related to soft tissue injuries and chronic soft tissue implications.

Let's begin with Stage 1 Chiropractic Soft Tissue treatment goals. Swelling occurs for 12- 72 hours post-traumatic insult. The motion is lost in the area affected. Chiropractic care is typically going to involve rest and support of the injured area along with ice. The goal is to block swelling, pain, and spasm.

Stage 2 of chiropractic management of soft tissue injury involves relieving passive congestion. Fluid gets trapped in the tissue which then restricts motion and causes pain. This congestion also delays healing, this is typically seen in days 2 through 4 post-injury. The goal of the chiropractic treatment is to remove fluid, offer pain relief, and to begin to restore motion. How a chiropractor does this is by chiropractic adjustments in the area involved. The chiropractic treatment will restore motion, block pain, relax tight muscles, and accelerate healing.

Stage 3 chiropractic care of soft tissue injuries involves repair of the damaged areas. This can begin as early as 5 days post-injury. Scar tissue starts to form in this stage. Scar tissue forms in an unorganized fashion to support the subluxated vertebra, in the case of spinal injury. The chiropractic adjustment is a controlled force applied to areas that are restricted preventing the body 's natural ability to heal. The chiropractor will determine where to apply the force. The chiropractic adjustment is done in a safe, effective, and comfortable way to reduce excessive scar tissue formation. Stage 3 of chiropractic management of soft tissue treatment can last up to 6 weeks post-injury. During stage 3 the chiropractor needs to address a limited range of motion as well as poor spinal biomechanics. These contribute to increased risk of re-injury and accelerated degeneration. This leads to chronic pain and weak muscles and ligaments. Restoring normal motion by adjusting the spinal segment involved allows the tissue to heal in a more functional way.

Stage 4 of chiropractic management of soft tissue injury is called the remodeling phase. When connective tissue remodels properly with proper biomechanical function the tissue heals with better strength and flexibility. This can take up to 14 weeks and in some cases a year. Here chiropractic care will improve and maintain motion and flexibility. More importantly, continued chiropractic care maintains proper function. This is significant because it will help reduce the risk of reinjury and degeneration.

Chiropractic care offers long term solutions that mere pain relief can by improving spinal biomechanics.

  • Neuropathy@CoreHealth

The most common medications recommended for neuropathy are anti-seizures and anti-convulsants medications. Lyrica is FDA authorized to treat diabetic neuropathy. There are possible negative effects to take into account, drowsiness, weight gain, dizziness, and queasiness. Anti-depressants are also authorized to deal with the pain associated with neuropathy. This would be Cymbalta which brings the threat of fatigue, drowsiness, and dizziness. So it would make good sense to question whether or not the remedy deserves the physical cost of dealing with neuropathy. Neuropathy can not be treated however can be helped.

Here are some things you can start doing immediately to help your peripheral neuropathy. B-Vitamins are a great beginning point. Many Americans lack B-Vitamins. You can ask your doctor which type to take, there are a number of to select from. If you smoke, stop immediately. Smoking cigarettes actually makes it harder to get adequate blood supply to the muscles and nerves in your legs. The legs figure predominately in cases of neuropathy. Warm baths will not just unwind the muscles however also promotes blood circulation. Workout, obviously, is shown to relieve a few of the discomfort connected with peripheral neuropathy. You should really start to exercise under the assistance of a physiotherapist. Your doctor can recommend a physical therapist.

If there is something to remove from this article is that you need to stay active. If you can no longer walk your pet dog because it injures to stroll it is important to restore that ability. Even if the pain is bad, work through the discomfort. Activities that bring you joy can help combat the psychological tiredness that may accompany the medications. Merely depending on medication is inadequate. You must advocate on your own and combat to keep doing what defines you as a person.

  • Plantar Fasciitis discussing treatment options

Understanding Plantar Fasciitis in today's busy world full of too much information. Foot pain can be caused by many different things. Falls, sports injuries, bad shoes, improper training methods, overutilization, and even underutilization. All of these can contribute to the painful condition known as plantar fasciitis. Runners usually are the victims and overutilization is the primary cause. Good news is that with proper fitting running shoes many can be helped dramatically. Something as simple as changing running shoes can stop plantar fasciitis pain dead in its' tracks. The advice of a running shoe store salesman is valuable. You run because you like it or maybe even need it. Taking the cheaper way out does not always add up wisely.

The tissue on the bottom of your foot ( plantar surface) gets tight. This tends to happen when the calf muscles pull on your heel. The tissue is thin and loaded with nerves that let you know there is a serious problem. Advil or Aleve may not do the trick here. Pain that won't go away should not be ignored especially if you want to run without pain. Here is another wild idea to get some rest between runs. Your body can do better with adequate rest. Give your feet a break every now and then.

Did you ever wonder who gets plantar fasciitis? It is not just runners anymore. Many athletes get it. An imbalance in the lower extremity usually is the cause. Then when your body can no longer take it the foot flairs up and your troubles begin. Where do you turn to when the pain gets in your way and prevents you from being as active as you would like to be?
There are somethings you can do at home to lessen the chance of getting plantar fasciitis. You can begin by stretching before and after a run. This just makes sense. There is no excuse for not properly stretching. If you enjoy running then put the time in to make running more enjoyable. All you have to do is go on Youtube and look up running stretches. Watch and learn, then do.

  • Migraine Headaches A Chiropractor Can Really Help You

Migraine headaches account for billions of dollars of lost time at work and countless hours of misery for those unlucky enough to get them. Unfortunately, there has been little new to offer headache sufferers in the way of relief. I want migraine and regular headaches sufferers to consider that which is old to be new again. It could mean lasting results and relief they have not been offered before. What I have in mind is old fashioned chiropractic care to free up subluxations in the neck. When bones malign they can place undue pressure on the nerves that feed the head. This alone can cause a tremendous amount of nerve pain. Removing the offending bone will relieve the pressure and pain effectively reducing the headaches.

Something else to consider if you have migraines or bad headaches. If your problem comes from a subluxated bone there will be pressure on the brain stem. You may not be up on anatomy but there is brain tissue into the second vertebra in the neck. Any subluxation in the occiput, C1, and C2 bones will affect the lower part of the brain. What would happen if you hit your thumb with a hammer? It would hurt. What happens when you crimp delicate brain tissue? It will hurt even more. While I suggested you consider something old did you ever think it would be chiropractic care?

One of the greatest benefits of chiropractic care in the treatment of migraines is that there is no damage to the liver, kidney or intestinal tract. Migraine sufferers have their headaches for years, in most cases, they are chronic in nature. The chances are they have self medicated with pain relievers like Advil, Aleve and Tylenol. All of these medications have side effects. When someone is in pain they will go over the recommended daily dose regardless of the damage it may do. The adage more is better is utilized even though there are warnings on the bottle against doing so. Long term abuse of over the counter medications lead to serious complications like liver or kidney disease and they can erode the stomach as well. Prolonged usage of Nsaids are serious and can jeopardize your health. These are serious consequences especially in light of the fact they could be helped with a simple chiropractic adjustment.

I want to take this time to explain the adjustment process. Many people fear the process out of the unknown. They have heard things about it so they are wary if not afraid of the process. The chiropractor will examine and x-ray the patient. They should take a history to determine any complicating factors. After this is done a treatment plan is given to the patient to remove the nerve interference. When the subluxations remove the nerve interference the brain is able to communicate with the body more efficiently and there is a decrease in pain as well. The chiropractor will use his hand or an instrument to move the bone causing the pain. Often relief can be felt immediately. My strict advice is that the patient needs to be 50% better in four weeks of care. They may not be healed but they need to see enough progress to warrant further treatment.

So what does this mean to you if you have migraines? Go find a chiropractor. Ask him or her questions. If you have never had a cervical x-ray then get one. If the curve

  • Chronic Low Back Pain treated with Lumbar Joint Mobilization

Lumbar Joint Mobilization helps reduce back pain.

Low Back Pain costs the U.S. economy over 100 billion dollars a year due to lost wages and productivity. Besides that, it really hurts when you cannot move your back due to the pain. For this topic let's point out that back pain usually involves several things. There is loss of mobility, there is a decrease in the disc height and potentially joint damage.

Joint mobilization has been used to treat lumbar spine. for over 100 years. Both Osteopathic and Chiropractic physicians routinely use joint mobilization as a means of reducing back pain. When a spinal bone is out of place it is called a subluxation. By mobilizing the spinal joint several physiological events take place to bring about the reduction in lower back pain.

Physical stress is reduced through lumbar joint mobilization by putting the offending bone back into it's proper place. The spinal ligaments that attach bone to bone will have less stress placed on the ligaments' elastic properties. The body tends to prefer homeostatic conditions. For additional consideration, the subluxated vertebra exerts pressure in an uneven fashion which can contribute to excessive wear and tear on the joint. It should be easy enough to understand that excessive wear and tear eventually results in degenerative conditions in the joint.

Lumbar joint mobilization has been shown to increase the intervertebral disc height. The mechanism of reducing stress on the joints by restoring proper alignment allows for greater levels of osmotic activity. The intervertebral disc height has been shown to expand post joint mobilization. The intervertebral disc acts as a shock absorber. The greater the water content the greater the shock absorbancy.

A dehydrated disc is called a desiccated disc. Disc desiccation is a common feature of degenerative disc disease. Uneven pressure on the desiccated disc complicates the dehydration. A vertebral subluxation places extra physical stress on the disc. Studies show a 4.2% increase in the apparent diffusion coefficient in the middle portion of the L5-S1 intervertebral disc after extension based lumbar joint mobilization. What this tells us is that joint mobilization allows the water content to be better disbursed across the center part of the disc. Disc desiccation can be partially reversed.

To make it easier to understand disc desiccation consider this, you leave home for a few days. Upon returning you have a sponge on the side of your sink that gets dried out and shrinks. This is similar to what happens when there is a subluxation exerting uneven forces on the lumbar disc. Think of the disc as a sponge, and the sponge "desiccates" or dries out it loses its cushioning properties.

When you mobilize the lumbar spine you get better displacement of the fluids in the disc which enhances the shock-absorbing properties. A plump fluid-filled disc allows for tighter tension on the spinal ligaments. The ligaments help attach bones to adjacent spinal bones. When there is ligament laxity due to a decrease in vertebral disc height that accompanies disc desiccation it allows the spinal bones to subluxate. A subluxation can be addressed with lumbar joint mobilization.

Lumbar joint mobilization has been shown to be a valid treatment to alleviate chronic lower pain due to disc desiccation as well as subluxation.

  • Headaches, Migraines, and Neck Pain- Why you should consider a chiropractor when your head hurts

Migraine headaches account for billions of dollars of lost time at work and countless hours of misery for those unlucky enough to get them. Unfortunately, there has been little new to offer headache sufferers in the way of relief. I want migraine and regular headache sufferers to consider that which is old to be new again. Any subluxation in the occiput, C1, and C2 bones will affect the lower part of the brain What happens when you crimp delicate brain tissue? It will hurt even more. While I suggested you consider something old did you ever think it would be chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care has its' share of detractors. This is in part to the fact that people do not know what it can do for people who have subluxations. If the bone is out of place and putting pressure on brain tissue can a pill effectively remove the pressure? No, of course, it cannot remove nerve pressure. It can block out pain impulses but it can not remove that which is causing the problem.  Whatever their reason are they are not informed about something simple and effective in relieving migraine and headache pain. Maybe you should educate your doctor about the benefits of chiropractic care in relieving migraine pain. All too often the medical profession has a locked in belief that what chiropractors do is of little merit. What are they basing their beliefs on? It is time to change beliefs in the interest of helping patients get better.

One of the greatest benefits of chiropractic care in the treatment of migraines is that there is no damage to the liver, kidney or intestinal tract. Migraine sufferers have their headaches for years, in most cases, they are chronic in nature. Prolonged usage of NSAIDs are serious and can jeopardize your health. These are serious consequences especially in light of the fact they could be helped with a simple chiropractic adjustment.

If the migraine sufferer does not feel enough improvement further tests such as an MRI or Ct Scan could be in order. Patients with chronic headaches need MRI's to make better diagnoses. I will never let a patient go more then 4 weeks without advanced studies if they are not progressing enough.

So what does this mean to you if you have migraines? Go find a chiropractor.Taking medication may help mitigate the migraines but if they keep returning you obviously have a problem. Solve that problem and get the relief my patients with migraines enjoy.
