  • Diabetic Foot Pain Neuropathy@CoreHealth Fairfield County's Leading Provider of Integrative Neuropathy Care

Have you experienced numbness that had started in your feet slowly worked its way up your legs? It may be barely noticeable at first. You may shrug this off as nothing serious since there is no pain to speak of in the beginning. What you don't notice is what can hurt you later on. The muscles in your legs receive information from the nerves outside the spine. These are called peripheral nerves. When these nerves are damaged, the muscles in your legs send faulty information to the brain. The brain then signals the muscles to compensate. This may not seem to be too bad but what happens when the pain starts to become crippling? What about when it starts to prevent sleep and requires medication?

Initially, you are not concerned about the possibility of falls, which can be disastrous as we all aware of. Most cruelly, with or without pain, peripheral neuropathy robs people of the things they loved doing. What happens when people give up physical activities like playing tennis or bike riding? Left untreated neuropathy renders everyday simple activities such as walking the dog impossible. With the loss of balance, walking without support is risky, stepping over the cat can be deadly, and picking up the grandchildren becomes a thing of the past.

Estimates of the number of Americans with peripheral neuropathy vary, with the National Institutes of Health putting it at 30 million while the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy puts it at 40 million Americans. The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has established a research registry to compile data and biosamples on peripheral neuropathy patients, sets the average age of those with the disease at 63, though onset often goes unnoticed and undiagnosed for several years.

The most common medications prescribed for neuropathy are anti-seizures and anti-convulsants medications. Lyrica is FDA approved to treat diabetic neuropathy. There are possible side effects to take into consideration, drowsiness, weight gain, dizziness, and nausea. Anti-depressants are also approved to treat the pain associated with neuropathy. This would be Cymbalta which carries the risk of fatigue, drowsiness, and dizziness. So it would make sense to question whether or not the cure is worth the physical cost of treating neuropathy. Neuropathy cannot be cured but can be helped.

Here are some things you can start doing right away. B-Vitamins are a good starting point. Most Americans are deficient in B-Vitamins. You can ask your physician which type to take, there are several to choose from. If you smoke, stop immediately. Smoking really makes it more difficult to gain adequate blood supply to the muscles and nerves in your legs. The legs figure predominately in cases of neuropathy. Warm baths will not only relax the muscles but also stimulates blood flow. Exercise, of course, is indicated to alleviate some of the pain associated with peripheral neuropathy. You should really start to exercise under the guidance of a physical therapist. Your doctor can recommend a physical therapist.

If there is one thing to take away from this article is that you need to stay active. If you can no longer walk your dog because it hurts to walk it is important to regain that ability. Even if the pain is bad, work through the pain. Activities that bring you joy can help combat the mental fatigue that may accompany the medications. Simply relying on medication is not enough. You must advocate for yourself and fight to keep doing what defines you as a person.

  • Spinal Decompression For Back Pain - Understanding How This Helps Core Health Darien

Back & Neck Pain Relief using Cutting Edge Non Surgical Spinal Decompression

Disc herniations cause serious back and neck pain. Usually diagnosed by an MRI, we can determine the severity of the bulge or herniation. A bulge is a minor herniation and can usually be fixed easier than a more serious herniation. The process for both neck spinal decompression and low back spinal decompression are virtually the same. To understand what happens think of when you squeeze a tube of toothpaste. While there is pressure still on the tube some toothpaste remains outside the tube. When you remove the pressure the remaining toothpaste goes back into the tube. This is very much what happens to your herniated or bulging disc in the back or neck. The spinal disc has left its place between the spinal bones. The disc then exerts pressure on the spinal cord or delicate spinal nerve roots. Non-surgical spinal decompression creates a negative pressure within the spinal canal that causes the disc material to be re-absorbed into its proper location. Now, of course, this can be done surgically but there are great risks involved with back surgery.

Neurosurgeon Norman Sheely recognized the inherent danger of multiple surgeries to treat herniated discs. You may not recognize the name but he invented many pain sparring devices including the tens units commonly used today to relieve back pain. He came up with the idea to create a therapy to remove the disc herniation using negative pressure in the disc space. Core Health Darien was one of the first chiropractic and physical therapy clinics in the country to adopt this groundbreaking therapy. We have found that combining spinal decompression with chiropractic care and physical therapy we can offer our back and neck pain patients the highest level of care without having to resort to surgery. Many have followed in our footsteps and have found the treatment to be wildly successful.

If you are having low back pain or serious neck pain and feel you have bulging or herniated discs then you should consider this treatment. You will be receiving chiropractic care along with physical therapy for a more complete solution to your lower back pain. We invite you to call Core Health Darien at 203-656-3636 and come in for an evaluation. Our office is centrally located on the Post Road in Darien, we also serve New Canaan, Norwalk and Stamford CT. Give us a call today, we look forward to helping you to relieve your back or neck pain with non-surgical spinal decompression.

Integrative Treatment for peripheral neuropathy- Vitamins and Supplements

Neuropathy@CoreHealth is Fairfield County's Leading provider of natural solutions for neuropathic pain. Our mission is to help people suffering from neuropathy get their lives back on track.

    peripheral neuropathy symptoms
Symptoms from peripheral neuropathy depend on the type of nerves damaged. The three types are motor nerves, sensory nerves, and autonomic nerves.

    Motor nerves
Your motor nerves send messages from the brain to the muscles so you can control your movements.

If your motor nerves are affected, you may experience symptoms including:

    muscle weakness or atrophy
difficulty moving your arms or legs
    muscle spasms or uncontrolled twitching
    decreased reflexes
    Sensory nerves
Sensory nerves send messages from other body parts to the brain and trigger your senses. When you experience a cold sensation or touch something sharp, you are using your sensory nerves.

If your peripheral neuropathy affects your sensory nerves, you may experience:

    tingling or numbness
    sensitivity to touch
    decreased sensation
inability to feel temperature changes or pain with hot and cold
    loss of reflexes and coordination

  • How to Choose A Chiropractor by a Chiropractor

The benefits of chiropractic care include pain relief, tissue healing, and good function. You will notice a better quality of sleep and have less downtime when you exert yourself. Your treatment may require different amounts of time to achieve each of these goals. Pain relief doesn't mean tissues have healed nor that function is restored
It often takes more time for tissues to fully heal than for pain relief. It may take more time to restore function that it takes for tissues to heal. The program works if you follow it.

Positively Must Restore Back Function - Fundamental Goal of Chiropractic Care

Function means the ability to perform every day and work activities. If your goal is only to get out of pain I am afraid you are wasting your time by coming to us. Sure we will get you out of pain but our unique back program goes much deeper. You need to be able to function without having pain. Function includes range of motion, flexibility, stability, strength, and coordination. Improving function the key to long term pain relief. Failure to restore function means any pain relief is temporary and increases the risk of chronic pain. Joints that have good function are not painful, perform better, and are less likely to be injured or degenerate. Decreased function can lead to injury and pain. Chiropractic adjustments helps minimize pain and maximize function by the use of adjustments, physical therapy exercise, and other methods.

Chiropractic Care Restores Your Backs Integrity
The purpose of care is to restore and maintain the health of the whole person and not just treat isolated symptoms or diseases. Your Back is complex, and everyone's back pain issues are different. The Back Pain Project personalizes care to help create the potential for well being and improve the quality of life, rather than just focusing on illness. The Back Pain Project is aimed at restoring and maintaining normal structure, joint, muscle, and nervous system, function. Does your chiropractor or physical therapist accomplish all this? If so continue using them!

What treatments you can expect from The Back Pain Program

CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS are integral to the success of The Back PainProject
Chiropractors use controlled forces, called adjustments when there are restrictions around joints that the body is unable to overcome itself. We use a special method called Applied Kinesiology to identify where there are restricted joints. Such barriers include muscle spasm, swelling (edema), scar tissue, and pain. The Back Pain Project examination identifies restricted joints whether they are painful or not. Chiropractic Adjustments specifically applied to joints can restore motion when the body's own muscles can not. Adjustments help relieve pain, as well as, restore and maintain normal movement, biomechanics, and function. The controlled force of adjustments safely generates the energy needed to overcome such restrictions and take a joint back to its normal, full range of motion.
Chiropractors carefully monitor pain, tissue healing, and function using specific outcome measures to know when a patient has achieved maximum benefit and it is time to end care or shift to a prevention/wellness program.

  • CIPN Chemo Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Dr.Brian McKay from Neuropathy@CoreHealth

    CIPN Chemo Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

CIPN symptoms vary from patient to patient, but in general, side effects include: feeling of numbness or "pins and needles" in your hands and feet; difficulty picking up an object or buttoning clothing; ringing in your ears or loss of hearing; changes in vision; sudden, stabbing pains in your hands or feet; constipation/difficulty urinating; muscle weakness or cramps; loss of balance or having difficulty walking; and feeling heat and cold, more or less than usual. All can add up to peripheral neuropathy.

Specific types of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery can cause damage to nerves that can lead to neuropathy Patients with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, may already have neuropathy as a result of these diseases. If you already have neuropathy and are starting cancer treatment, speak to your team about your specific symptoms.

Certain chemotherapy drugs that are more likely to cause neuropathy
    Carboplatin
    Cisplatin
    Oxaliplatin
    Taxotere (docetaxel)
    Jevtana (carbazitaxel)
    Velban (vinblastine)
    Vincristine
    Vinorelbine
    Etoposide

Chiropractic care along with physical therapy are some of the most effective treatments for neuropathy — it can help with balance, strength and safety. Occupational therapy can also be beneficial and can help patients improve fine motor skills like buttoning shirts. In both cases, it is very important for patients to advocate for themselves by asking their doctor or care team for a referral to a physical and/or occupational therapist.

In addition to these therapies, low-impact exercise like swimming and biking, as well as acupuncture, relaxation techniques, meditation, and guided imagery exercises can all help with the side effects of neuropathy.

  • Low Back Pain in Pregnancy a Common Sense Approach

     Back Pain During Pregnancy
back pain during pregnancy'Most pregnant women experience back pain, typically starting in the second half of pregnancy. Most women feel pain in their lower back, in the posterior pelvic region or lower lumbar region.

Posterior pelvic pain is the more common of the two and is a deep pain felt below and at the sides of the waistline, on one or both sides of your buttocks or at the back of your thighs. It can be experienced on one or both sides of your body.

Lumbar pain occurs in the area of the lumbar vertebrae in your lower back, at and above the waist in the center of the back. The pain may radiate to your leg. Lumbar pain during pregnancy feels similar to lower back pain you may have experienced before you were pregnant.

Back pain during pregnancy can range from mild pain caused by specific activities to acute back pain that can become chronic back pain over time. Women with pre-existing lower back problems or chronic pain are at a higher risk for back pain, and their back pain can occur earlier in pregnancy.

How Often Does Back Pain During Pregnancy Happen?
Back pain during pregnancy is extremely common. It is estimated between 50 and 70 percent of pregnant women experience back pain.

What Are Some Symptoms of Back Pain During Pregnancy?
The symptoms of back pain during pregnancy are very similar to the symptoms of back pain prior to pregnancy. Some of the symptoms include:

Pain in the center of your back
Pain above or at the sides of the waistline
    Pain over the pubic bone
Pain in the buttocks or thighs
Pain that can radiate to the legs
Stiffness or discomfort after sitting or standing for long period of time
What Are Some Causes of Back Pain During Pregnancy?
There are several reasons why you may experience back pain during pregnancy. Sone of the most common causes include:

Weight gain: As you gain weight during pregnancy, the spine has to support that added weight. That change causes lower back pain. The weight of the growing baby and uterus can also put pressure on the blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back, causing pain.
Changes in hormones: During pregnancy, your body releases a hormone called relaxin that allows ligaments in the pelvic area to relax and joints to loosen in preparation for giving birth. The hormone can cause ligaments that support the spine to loosen as well. This, along with the shifting of joints, can lead to instability and pain.
Changes in posture: Poor posture, excessive standing or sitting, and bending over can trigger or increase your back pain. In addition, while you’re pregnant, your center of gravity shifts forward as your uterus and baby grow, causing your posture and the way you move to change. This can result in strain and pain.
Stress: Stress can cause muscle tension in the back, resulting in back pain or back spasms. You may experience an increase in back pain during stressful periods of your pregnancy.
Chronic back pain prior to pregnancy.
How Can Back Pain During Pregnancy Be Treated?
Back pain is very common in pregnancy and is usually not serious. While it may not be completely preventable, there are some changes you can make to reduce the severity or frequency of your back pain. Some treatments for back pain include:

Exercise: Regular exercise strengthens muscles and boosts flexibility, easing the stress on your spine. Good exercises for reducing back pain i

  • Dr.Brian will my back pain go away?

Will Your Low Back Pain Go Away?

The simplest answer is yes, your low back pain will go away. Not comes the what if's. Low-grade back pain from a muscle strain will probably go away on its own after a few days of rest, heat, and Advil or Aleve. If there is an underlying reason more complicated then muscle pain the low back pain will probably come back again soon. What typically happens to people is that they feel that when they have no back pain they have no problem. This is erroneous thinking on their part.

The lower back is a mechanical marvel. So is a car for that matter. Do you expect your car to run well when it gets older? Do you take care of your car? Do you take better care of your car then you do for your body? The point I am trying to make is that your back is mechanical. Having said that it should be easy to understand that mechanical things break down. Even when you take good care of them.

Small traumas over a lifetime can add up to big problems as we age. What happens when you neglect your car? It will cost you in the long run. You fail to maintain your body and it costs you on the long run. The car and your spine are mechanical. The absence of pain does not mean you are healthy, it means that you are pain-free. Being free of back pain is a good thing. Ignoring the lower back pain by continuing to take NSAIDs just means you pay a higher price when your back really breaks down.

If you want to avoid a herniated disc then you would be well advised to seek out a chiropractor to address your lower back pain. Yes, I am biased because I am a chiropractor. You should also think about seeing a physical therapist for low back pain especially in the early stages. Chiropractic care is important to move the vertebra causing a pinched nerve. Physical therapy and good exercise can prevent the vertebra from going out of place. Regular exercise and stretching will go a long way to preventing a back problem

The reality is that most of us will have back pain. Most of the time it will go away on its own until it doesn't. Then you have more work to do to get back on track. Everything mechanical can and will break down at some point, your lower back is no exception.

  • Who Can Treat Your Peripheral Neuropathy- Neuropathy@CoreHealth

Why Neuropathy@CoreHealth may be the right choice to reverse your neuropathy symptoms.

First of all, let's be totally transparent. Neuropathy@CoreHealth is not a medicinal approach to treating neuropathy. If medication is helping you deal with your neuropathy we say great and by all means, continue with what you are doing. When it is not working is when you may need Neuropathy@CoreHealth

We want to share with you the latest technological advances for successfully treating neuropathy. Where we can show proof of our program's effectiveness. Please understand Neuropathy@CoreHealth is not one single product or service. It is a customizable treatment culling from an array of therapies that your medical doctor has never heard of. Yes, we get the question all the time, "Why hasn't my doctor told me about this?" all the time. I don't have an answer for you. Most M.D.'s are busily prescribing medications. If one doesn't work they can always try another. Neuropathy@CoreHealth is not about competing with medications we are about delivering cutting edge relief for people with peripheral neuropathy and we have been very successful these past few years.

So what might you expect when you decide that you want to be one of our patients here at Neuropathy@CoreHealth? We are going to ask a lot of questions. we want to understand what neuropathy is doing to your life. We need to know how peripheral neuropathy impacts you. Does it affect the quality of life? We think you need to be aware of this as well.

Next, we are going to do an exam. If you have been to a neurologist you may have had some of these tests done already. Bear with us we are trying to find out everything we can to see if we can help you. Not everyone walking through our doors is going to be accepted as a patient. naturally, we try and screen for those patients who we are certain we can help. We are going to look at your balance very closely and use a special test that allows us to see if your vestibular system is intact.I promise you a very interesting and very thorough exam so we present a report of findings.

Now it is report card day. we ask you to bring in a spouse, significant other, friend or family member to review our findings. We actually will not do the report of findings if you can not bring someone with you. There is a very good reason for this. We will be presenting a comprehensive treatment plan as well as a review of our findings. We will be going through a lot of information. Two people ensure that everything is heard and understood, we will go through a great deal of information. This is your health and we want you to get the most of the information we need to share with you. We will make allowances on rare occasions.

Comprehensive Review of Services from Neuropathy@CoreHealth.

PEMF Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy; The application of pulsed magnetic fields has, through research findings, been shown to help the body to restore normal potentials at an accelerated rate, thus aiding the healing of most wounds, regenerating tissue and reducing swelling faster.

Rebuilder Technology: The ReBuilder is a medical device that will reeducate your nerves that affect your feet and legs, this way they conduct the necessary signals better and thus reduce or even eliminate the symptoms of Neuropathy that you are now experiencing.

Class IV Cold Laser: Recent research has shown that Cold Laser Therapy can help treat the underlying causes of neuropathy and help with symptom management. Cold Laser Therapy helps by actually stimulating microcirculation around the nerve fibers, which increases blood flow to the nerves and helps to heal and reduce neuropathic pain.

  • Peripheral Neuropathy Help Greenwich and all of Fairfield County

Peripheral neuropathy refers to the conditions that result when nerves that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord from and to the rest of the body are damaged or diseased.

The peripheral nerves make up an intricate network that connects the brain and spinal cord to the muscles, skin, and internal organs. Peripheral nerves come out of the spinal cord and are arranged along lines in the body called dermatomes. Typically, damage to a nerve will affect one or more dermatomes, which can be tracked to specific areas of the body. Damage to these nerves interrupts communication between the brain and other parts of the body and can impair muscle movement, prevent normal sensation in the arms and legs, and cause pain.

Neuropathy@CoreHealth is Fairfield County's leading provider of peripheral neuropathy relief care. We have a video describing PEMF for Neuropathy that further explains this part of our treatment. It is one of the many ways we help people with chronic nerve pain. We offer monthly neuropathy support group meetings in our office at no charge.

  • Osteoarthritis of the Knee Mechanisms of Relief

Knee on Trac Solution for Knee Pain
    Core Health Darien

    Darien CT 06820

Knee pain due to osteoarthritis affects millions of Americans.  Recently, a new therapy, known as Horizontal Therapy, was incorporated at Core Health Darien. This machine (ProElec DT 2000) has been a breakthrough in electromedicine, combining all known forms of electromedical therapy, in addition to this new revolutionary therapy. It is the most sophisticated form of electrotherapy available.

A German company, Hako-Med, engineered and manufactured this advanced unit to create a unique electrotherapy treatment concept called Horizontal Therapy. The field of electromedicine has evolved over the years and provided us with electrical muscle stimulation, TENS therapy, microcurrent, interferential therapy, and other forms. Each of these methods of electrotherapy has a particular role in treating a variety of conditions, but none of them approach the therapeutic effects which are combined in the PRO ElecDT 2000 with Horizontal Therapy.

Communication between cells takes place in two ways: bioelectrically and biochemically. Whether the cells are in bone, muscle, ligament or nerve tissue, communication occurs via electrical currents and chemical messengers. When cellular communication is impaired, pain and disease occur, so that the normal functional state is lost. This causes a further breakdown in cellular communication.

Up til now, either the bioelectrical or the biochemical communication could be enhanced with electrotherapy at one time, but, not both at once. With Horizontal Therapy, both bioelectrical and biochemical components can be treated all in one treatment session. By holding the bioelectric intensity constant while changing the frequency, Horizontal Therapy can have a broad spectrum physiologic effect. The PRO ElecDT 2000 preset programs are designed to do this automatically.

What Types of Conditions Are Treated with Horizontal Therapy?

Conditions such as knee pain, low back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, overuse injuries, various kinds of headaches, muscle spasm, nerve pain, joint swelling, inflammation and many other conditions can be effectively treated with the Horizontal Therapy.

At low frequencies in the bioelectric range, circulation, lymphatic flow, swelling, pain, and muscle function can all be improved. At higher frequencies in the biochemical range, circulation, lymphatic flow, swelling, pain, immune system function, muscle activation, and metabolism are enhanced.
