In today's conversation, Sophie opens about some of her impactful experiences including being bullied in school, positioning herself as a public figure in the fitness industry and the life changing moment when she decided to switch gears to prioritize her mental health. She discusses some of the challenges she encountered when she began her healing journey including the few self-help resources offered by licensed mental health providers. And she talks about her passion for mental health awareness and support, as well as what led to her building DiveThru.

From podcasts and articles, to online programs and newsletters, Divethru provides tools and resources to support young people and their mental wellness. This week, Elyce speaks with Amber Gardner, the Director of Partnerships of To Write Love on Her Arms ("TWLOHA"), about the grassroots, nonprofit that has played a huge part in the birth of the mental health movement. In this conversation, we talk about stigma and the discomfort that many individuals face when struggling with their mental health and trying to access support and resources. Amber shares her own lived experiences and how she has coped and worked through the different seasons of her life. We discuss the importance of connection and a supportive work environment, as well as the importance of self-care and leaning on other for support.
Amber discovered To Write Love on Her Arms in 2008 during her first season of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. She credits TWLOHA with giving her the hope that she needed to stay, and the encouragement needed to get the mental health help she deserved. Over the years, as she continued on her own mental health journey, she became passionate about advocating for, and creating space for others to feel safe sharing their own mental health experiences. As the Director of Partnerships, Amber works with businesses, musicians, athletes, and individuals who are looking to partner together to spread a message of help and hope to their audiences.
To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery. Today we chat with Mr.Chazz about parenting, understanding child development and behavior and the importance of having empathy for others. Mr. Chazz talks about his own experiences in school and with learning as kid and shares how this has fueled his passion for the work that he does. We discuss some of things many parents struggle with in terms of parenting and meeting their child's emotional needs. Mr. Chazz describes some of the barriers that make it difficult for parents to change some of their parenting strategies and behaviors.
Mr. Chazz is an Educational Specialist who, “teaches teachers to teach” in a chain of Child Development Centers. His mission in life is to enjoy the process of becoming the best version of himself and help others do the same. His Vision is to help Adults See, Guide and Trust children. He closely works with 8 different schools, 100s of teachers and 1,000s of children. He has trained thousands of teachers in person and virtually. He earned his Master’s in Executive Leadership at American University. May 25, 2021 Intrusive Thoughts, Coping with Anxiety and the Importance of Being Silly with Lauren Ruth Martin

Today we chat with Lauren Ruth Martin, LPC-MHSP about anxiety and what it actually means to have intrusive thoughts. Lauren shares her own experiences with anxiety, perfectionism and learning how to manage her intrusive thoughts. We discuss navigating relationships when you struggle with anxiety and the importance of informing partners and loved ones of how they can best respond and support you when you are going through it. Lauren shares some of the techniques and tools that she uses personally and with her own clients to cope with their anxiety. She discuses the importance of being silly as an adult and how that helps us to re-wire both our brain and body to be more comfortable with triggers and threat.
Lauren Ruth Martin, LPC-MHSP is a licensed therapist located right outside of Nashville. Lauren is a woo girl gone mild who wants to add a little glitter to everyone's lives. Lauren specializes in perfectionism, treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Using techniques from Radically Open Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (RODBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), she is all about doing your way out of stuck spots. Lauren likes to call it out with kindness and doesn't shy away from keynote speaking, podcasting ("A Novel Life"), and sharing insights on IG. She believes creating an aspirational life doesn't have to be over the top.

In this episode, we talk to Crystal Anthony about gang violence, human trafficking and generational trauma. Crystal shares her insights about the juvenile justice system and how the system itself including gaps in services make it difficult for youth and vulnerable communities to rehabilitate and continue to perpetuate the criminalization of marginalized communities. Crystal describes the efforts she and her colleague have made to advocate for underserved populations and the trauma-based work and therapy that she provides to youth and their families.
Crystal Anthony is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and is a highly esteemed person in the juvenile justice system in both San Diego County and Orange County. She has extensive experience working with youth and young adults that have been involved with human trafficking. She is the co-executive director of Underground GRIT. Crystal has been awarded for her work in human trafficking and advocacy efforts in the community, as well as for her collaborative efforts in the juvenile justice system.

In this episode, we speak to Mary Twomey Odgers and Amanda Caldwell about their personal experiences and understanding of suicidality. Mary and Amanda both describe their grief and loss of loved ones who have died by suicide, as well as how they have worked through these losses and other life events and challenges.
Mary Twomey Odgers is a writer, retired registered nurse of twenty-two years, and life coach, whose default view of the world is through the lens of optimism. She is the author of Six Funerals and a Wedding, her memoir, that further illustrates both the grief and hopefulness that was shared in today's conversation.
Amanda Caldwell is a wife, mother, and floral designer who has made the decision to live alcohol free and hopes to inspire others who have chosen to do the same. You can follow Amanda on Instagram @sober_musings_with_mandy
When it comes to suicide prevention:
DO try and share resources and emphasize seeking help

DO share warning signs, risk factors, and protective factory
.
DO emphasize prevention
.
AVOID glorifying suicide or people who have died by suicide
.
AVOID suicide or suicidal ideation as common
.
AVOID sharing details and descriptions around methods of suicide
.
Though commonly used for a long time, try to AVOID using language like “commit suicide”, which can evoke association with crime or sin. Instead, try shifting your language to “died by suicide” or “death by suicide”
