Eyal Weizman is Professor of Visual Cultures and Director of the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths, University of London.

He is a founding member of Decolonizing Architecture/Art Residency (DAAR) and directs Forensic Architecture, an ESRC funded project considering the place of architecture in international humanitarian law.

This event forms part of the T&G Architecture Lectures – a series focusing on the reciprocity between theoretical and material practice, based at the School of Architecture & the Built Environment, University of Nottingham.

The Residents is a series of artists’ residencies and is part of Trust New Art, the National Trust’s contemporary art programme working with artists to connect more people to National Trust places.

For six months in 2011 Support Structure were in residence at Clumber Park. They will present their work over one weekend across two sites in Nottinghamshire.

Support Structure is a collaboration between architect Céline Condorelli, based in London, and artist-curator Gavin Wade, based in Birmingham. Whilst in residence they focused on the absent Clumber House, researching the uses of the building before it was demolished in 1937, and connecting its history with other ‘missing houses’ around the world.

Support Structure have imagined a future for Clumber through forty proposals for artworks in response to the park. Proposal 1 is a publication, which is available at the park itself, and at Nottingham Contemporary.

Laleh Khalili is Senior Lecturer in Middle East Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She will discuss the history of the Israel/Palestine conflict since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. A one day seminar within DAAR’s reconstruction of the Palestinian Parliament, A Common Assembly will consider the new nature of political action and association, against the background of current collective protest in the Middle East and around the world. The term Common Assembly describes a radical form of political participation, revolutionary protest and collective action - from Cairo’s Tahrir Square, St Paul’s Cathedral - and Nottingham’s Market Square. These forums have changed the meaning of the words common, assembly and occupation. Artists Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri organise the 16 Beaver Group, an influential artist community and discussion forum in New York. Rasha Salti is an independent curator and freelance writer from Beirut who has written extensively about art, film and politics in the Middle East. Sari Hanafi is Associate Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut and editor of Idafat: the Arab Journal of Sociology. Lieven De Cauter is a philosopher, art historian, writer, and activist who teaches Philosophy of Culture in Leuven, Brussels, and Rotterdam and writes on contemporary art and architecture. Berlage Studio are a group of students who work closely with DAAR and are based at Berlage Institute. They will be presenting on a new project on the returns to Jaffa-Tel Aviv. Already there! was selected from many museums and collections. Researcher and historian Katy Barrett will consider the works in the exhibition, the type of collections and museums they come from, and what it means to rearrange them. Barrett has worked at the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and Pitt Rivers Museum.

The talk will be followed by a performance of a specially commissioned piece by Nottingham duo Surfacing- of whom Bell is a member. Entitled 'What Is This That Stands Before Me?', the performance will sample Weber's sculpture and famous works of dissonance (as well as creating plenty of its own).
