  • Veteran Pollster & Georgia Dawg Dan Judy

Dan Judy is a partner with Northstar Public Opinion Research, one of the top Republican polling firms in the country. His client list reads like a who's who of Republican politics and electeds from the past 20 years. Dan is a shining example of what we Georgia Men call a "DGD" or "Damn Good Dawg." He's one of the few people in politics whom The Chairman "trusts implicitly," and as is obvious from the interview a thoughtful leader in the worlds of both politics and public opinion research.

Dan is also a mountain climber, and a through hiker of The Appalachian Trail. Ask him why he admires Corch Irving Meyers.

  • Senator Bob Kerrey

Former Nebraska Governor and United States Senator Bob Kerrey is our first interview with an elected official, and he does not disappoint!

Bob is a former Navy Seal, Vietnam Veteran and a recipient of The Medal of Honor. His wit and wisdom really shine through in every topic we discuss – he maintains a sort of detached insouciance, which can only come with facing mortality and understanding your particular place in the world.

We cover everything from his early life in Nebraska, his decision to join the Navy; leaving his post-service business career to run for Governor and US Senate – winning each time he ran; His campaign for President, and his experience as a member of the 9/11 Commission.

We even have friends in common, in that The Chairman's grandfather wrote the citation for the Medal of Honor for Paul W. "Bud" Bucha – though Bob does not have a picture of Bud on the wall of his living room.

And of course we discuss the clip (linked below) of Bob singing "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" as his victory speech after winning the 1988 campaign for US Senate – which has apparently occupied more space in our heads than it ever did in Senator Kerrey's – and that's part of his particular charm.

We even touch on how rules and regulations around small business are "almost enough to make you a Libertarian," but also how "Government is not broken, you just have to work at it" – such an interesting perspective from a 3 term statewide elected official and candidate for President of The United States.

Watch the most authentic and revealing video of a politician Dave's ever seen before you listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWaDkGXzs_M&t=140s

The song itself is a King Hell Monster of the futility of war, and how it grinds up young men, and leaves children asking "What are they marching for?" – and as Bob says, watch his kids' reactions behind him on stage.

Bob even named his book after the a line in the opening of the song, here's the Audible version of him reading it:

  • Carter King From Futurebirds

Carter King from America's Favorite Cosmic Space Country Band Futurebirds joins us today to talk about inspiration, band dynamics, pandemic plans, and whether Dave can manifest a tour with Futurebirds and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard using only his mind?

Futurebirds have been building up their fanbase, touring the country, and putting out records for over 10 years now, and always feel like they're just on the cusp on becoming a household name. With three strong songwriters, and a sound that's an amalgam of many things but doesn't hew to just being one thing, they can be a tough act to subscribe. But since the pandemic is over for you bitches (as long as you got that Vax) you can go and do the one thing that will make you a BirdsHead – go see them live.

The Chairman and CHRID have had the pleasure of seeing them live several times, in several iterations, together and apart – and every time they bring the heat. From Dave's kids getting onstage at the show at Waverly on Dave's birthday, to encoring with "Rocks Off" and "Six Days" on the road at the MMFA, going to see DBT with their pedal steel player, KIFFY, they're a fun band and a good hang.

  • Jack Goldsmith on 'Living With Hoffa' And Other American Conundrums

Jack Goldsmith is The Learned Hand Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, the co-founder of The Lawfare Blog and the "After Trump" podcast. He is the author of "In Hoffa's Shadow. A Stepfather, A Disappearance in Detroit, and My Search for The Truth," about his life growing up with a stepfather who was named as The Number One Suspect in the disappearance (and presumed death) of James Riddle Hoffa – the longtime Teamster leader.

Jack, a former high ranking official in The Department of Justice, chronicles his life growing up as the son of a mafia-connected Teamster official who is surveilled, harassed and harangued by various three letter agencies with an interest in solving the Hoffa riddle (no pun intended).

We also touch on his time as Deputy Legal Advisor to President Bush, the presumed omniscience of government's monitoring of our electronic communications, and his newest project "After Trump" where he and Bob Bauer seek to strengthen current law and to encode certain norms into actually legally binding statutes.

And if you listen until the end, you find out Who Killed Jimmy Hoffa?

  • Bob Shrum Part 2

Legendary political consultant and Director, The USC Center for The Political Future Bob Shrum keeps walking us through the history he continues to witness.

Last episode, Bob took us from meeting then-Senator John F. Kennedy as a high school student volunteer for the 1960 Democratic National Convention, on up to hiding below the stage to make sure the TelePrompTer didn't fail during Senator Ted Kennedy's concession/retrenchment-as-elder-statesman "The Dream Will Never Die" speech at the 1980 Democratic Convention.

In Part Two, we talk about Ted Kennedy's loyalty and how it manifested itself in the "veterans" of his office always coming to his aid, a vast swath of Governors, Senators, Mayors and other elected officials, Bob's lowkey place in the pantheon of American gourmands, the continued need for good creative to do persuasion, and his deep and abiding love and admiration for his amazing wife Mary Louise Oates aka "Oatsie" – and her work in opening a homeless shelter in LA leads us back to that most southern thing of all: Football. It Just Means More!

Dave does one of his favorite things, and invites a famous and accomplished guest to come visit him in Alabama, with the promise of a dinner at a Frank Stitt restaurant. This will continue to be a bug, until someone takes him up on it, when it will become a feature.

Bob is a legend in the business of political consulting, and a member of the American Association of Political Consultants Hall of Fame.

  • Bonus: Remembering Joe Slade White

Earlier this week we were saddened by the news that legendary political consultant Joe Slade White had passed away at the age of 71. Apart from being good at his job, Joe was also gracious with his time, mentoring a whole generation of consultants, and inspiring the concept for this podcast.

We spoke to Joe back in March of this year and are replaying that episode here with a new intro by Dave, memorializing his friend. Our condolences go out to Joe's family, friends and colleagues. Rest in power, Joe Slade White.

  • Doc Sweitzer Has A Posse

"Y'all know The Doctor? Doctor John? Mack Rebbinack?"

Like another Show Friend from Show Business, Thomas "Doc" Sweitzer has had a front row seat on the stage with "bigger" consultants while carving out a very successful niche for himself.

Go to any big to do in the world of political consultants, and you'll find Doc holding down his niche – doling out advice to them who need but may not want it, and them who want it but may not need it. As becomes obvious throughout the episode, he's a contradiction, but not a contrarian who "takes what he does, but not himself too seriously."

He's a bridge to the talent of a previous generation, havig worked for such pols as Jake Pickle and Charlie Wilson, and Bob Casey – "The Three Time Loss from Holy Cross" as well as the current US Senator. Doc inducted Bob Shrum and James Carville into the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) Hall of Fame, where he sits on the board of directors. He also has a posse. Dave has the t shirt to prove it, somewhere.

  • Kevin Walling Is The Democrat Your Dad Knows

How does a self-described "nerdy gay kid" become a Fox News and OAN contributor? Kevin P.
